Ryan Giggs’s new one-year contract at Manchester United should see the Welshman overtake Bobby Charlton’s record total of appearances for the club, but there are faint rumblings amongst the fans that Giggs has not started this season at all well, and that perhaps a new deal should have been delayed until later in the campaign at least. A cursory look at Giggs’s stats from the last four seasons shows that he is putting in just as much effort but the performance is just not quite there: Player Ryan Giggs Season 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 Appearances 32 27 30 8 Minutes On Pitch 2,322 1,863 2,314 659 Goal Attempts Goals 5 3 4 0 Shots On Target 19 11 18 2 Shots Off Target 25 15 23 11 Shots/game 1.4 1.0 1.4 1.6 Shooting Accuracy 43% 42% 44% 15% Chance Conversion 11% 12% 10% 0% Passing Goal Assists 9 7 7 1 Key Passes 71 58 97 27 Chances created/game 2.5 2.4 3.5 3.5 Total Passes 904 1,030 1,011 280 Pass Completion % 75% 75% 72% 69% Crossing Total Crosses 259 208 263 75 Cross Completion % 32% 37% 28% 21% For instance, Giggs has hit an average of 1.6 shots per game and created 3.5 chances per game this season, both of which are figures that were not bettered in the previous three campaigns. Yet the Welshman has failed to score in the Premier League this season and has only one assist to his name so far (for Carlos Tevez versus Chelsea). Where it seems that Giggs has declined is with his consistency. His pass completion and cross completion rates are significantly down and perhaps age is finally slowing the Wizard of Cardiff. Nonetheless, with nine Premier League titles to his name and countless experience, Giggs will continue to be a vital member of the United squad for some time yet. |

Yeah I think we have signed him for his experience because it will be vital in developing the younger players. Interesting that Fergie's words on him signing a new contract were something along the lines of "he will be here for many more years to come" which suggests that he will be staying on in some capacity after he has retired. I don't think that anybody can argue with him not doing as well recently. |
