Lawro's predictions

By Mark Lawrenson
BBC Sport football expert

HOW DID LAWRO DO LAST WEEKEND?
Lawro's predictions
Arsenal 3-0 Sunderland
Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
Blackburn 2-0 Birmingham
Bolton 0-2 Chelsea
Fulham 2-1 Portsmouth
Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham
Man City 2-0 Middlesbrough
Man Utd 2-0 Wigan
Newcastle 1-1 Everton
Reading 2-0 Derby
Actual results
Arsenal 3-2 Sunderland
Aston Villa 1-0 West Ham
Blackburn 2-1 Birmingham
Bolton 0-1 Chelsea
Fulham 0-2 Portsmouth
Liverpool 2-2 Tottenham
Man City 3-1 Middlesbrough
Man Utd 4-0 Wigan
Newcastle 3-2 Everton
Reading 1-0 Derby

Last week, Lawro got SEVEN results right, but NO perfect scores.

THIS WEEK'S PREDICTIONS
(Kick-offs 1500 unless stated)

SATURDAY

Everton v Liverpool (1245 BST)

This is not an ideal time for either team to be going into a Merseyside derby.

Both teams have had players away in various parts of Europe over the last few days and have been struggling to produce their best form consistently in recent weeks.

It is not likely to make for the best viewing on TV and I cannot see anything but a stalemate at the end of it.

Match preview
Prediction: 1-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arsenal v Bolton

What a time to be playing the leaders!

Bolton are clearly in a state of flux, with manager Sammy Lee leaving this week, and there is bound to be some fall-out.

It is tough enough beating Arsenal anywhere at the moment but, with their resurgent home form, it is hard to look beyond a convincing home win.

Match preview
Prediction: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Blackburn v Reading

Every time Blackburn play at home these days you pretty much turn up expecting a home win.

Roque Santa Cruz, who has made an impressive start, could be out for a while though because of a knee injury.

But against a Reading team that has been struggling, they should still have too much.

Match preview
Prediction: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fulham v Derby

Well this is a real basement battle, with Fulham creeping into the bottom three after a poor run.

Away from home you cannot see Derby picking up too many points, they just do not seem to have enough to avoid relegation.

It will be a tight, tense affair, even this early in the season, and a draw will suit Derby more than Fulham.

Match preview
Prediction: 1-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Man City v Birmingham

City have been the story of the season so far, particularly the attacking threat posed by Elano and Martin Petrov.

It is funny how Eastlands manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's star has been shining brightly, while that of his successor as England boss, Steve McClaren, is fading.

There is talk of Steve Bruce losing his job when Carson Yeung takes over Birmingham. That would be hard on Steve because I think he has done a good job and, whatever happens they need to rubber-stamp the buy-out soon.

Match preview
Prediction: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Middlesbrough v Chelsea

Middlesbrough are lacking in quality and the new signings they made in the summer have not really settled in yet.

They have had good results at home against Chelsea in the past two seasons but, whether the injured John Terry faces them or not, I cannot see them winning this time.

Chelsea are a different proposition than when Jose Mourinho left as boss and they will want to get a good result ahead of their Champions League game in midweek.

Match preview
Prediction: 0-2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wigan v Portsmouth

Wigan have been on a real downward spiral and without Emile Heskey and Antoine Sibierski up front, appear short of ideas.

Pompey, on the other hand, are showing serious intentions of securing a Uefa Cup place.

They are good to watch, have some very experienced players and pace in the right positions, but may have to settle for a point.

Match preview
Prediction: 1-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aston Villa v Man Utd (1715 BST)

I have seen Villa play on a couple of occasions and they seem to lack a cutting edge, even though they have got some good players.

United, on the other hand, have multiple threats going forward and striker Wayne Rooney seems much happier.

Earlier on they were winning by the odd goal and the hallmark of a good side is when they win without playing particularly well but I think we could have a shock here and feel that Villa might just trip them up.

Match preview
Prediction: 2-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SUNDAY

West Ham v Sunderland (1600 BST)

West Ham have tightened up a bit without looking that inventive up front and that is mainly because they are missing so many influential players with long-term injuries.

But I think they will see off a Sunderland side that put in a gutsy performance at Arsenal in their last game.

They are not picking up too many points on their travels and I don't see them doing it at Upton Park either.

Match preview
Prediction: 2-0

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MONDAY

Newcastle v Tottenham (2000 BST)

There is a lot of talk about striker Michael Owen's future but he's not going anywhere and the longer he plays at Newcastle the more his value appears to drop.

I am not convinced about Tottenham at all. I have stopped trying to work out what their board is playing at but it appears that Martin Jol is only in charge until they can get someone else.

I think they will earn a draw at St James' Park but maybe a bad result would put him out of his anguish.

Match preview
Prediction: 1-1

2-1 Aston Villa, that would be a shock. But I suspect they could edge out Man Utd just like they did to Chelsea.

Everything he says in the United one goes in favour of a United win but then he just changes his mind on the last line. Strange!

I think Chelsea might struggle against Boro. Didn't they last season? I'm sure that I remember Boro beating them at home once. Bolton could cause an upset too!

I've quoted this story a hundred times, but i'll go again.

Lawro, last season, "predicted" that Liverpool would win 30, draw 8 and lose none of their 38 league games last season. He "predicted" United would win win 20, draw 10 and lose 8.

Thick, boring, useless, idiotic, nasal. "irish", pathetic and biased toss pot.
