when i was 16 i used to run for school in the north west games

i could do it in about 11.6

Back in the day I could do 11.4 fastest in most teams I ever played for but real sprinters would leave me for dead.

But jumping back to the earlier point, 100m speed isn't that important, it's speed off the mark that is key. If you can get going quickly and beat someone over 2 to 5 yards then that puts you in great stead for football. I used to be relatively fast over 50 - 100m, but unfortunately never had that real instant pace that makes so much difference in the game.

Used to play with one lad who because he worked shifts could only play 2 out of 3 Saturdays. To look at him he didn't look in real shape, he had a slight paunch. He had two things though that singled him out he was a whippet over 2 yards and needed no back lift to really smack a ball.

Both seasons he played for us we finished lower half of the league and he only played 2 out of 3 games for us, but he was the leading scorer in the league. 2 paces to make space and shoot, he was unbelievable!

Anything over about 10 or 15m I would have left him standing but that wasn't important, somehow he hit top speed in 2 steps. That sets you apart.

On a final point Henry would sprint and then seem to have a turbo that kicked in to move him past players, that was very impressive too.
