recently boobby robson bemoaned the lack of intelligence in the england squad, he claimed that wayne rooney in particular lacked the football intelligence at the top level,it he felt it was this that resulted in the penalty conceded against russia, what do others think?

Are you sure it wasn't Homer's friend Mr Blooby?

In answer to your question...Rooney is obviously going to lack a certain degree of intelligence because he's only just turned 22 (yesterday I believe - happy birthday Mr Rooney). There's no reason that he can't improve it and gain through experience through playing against the top teams in the world.

As for intelligence in the rest of the team, isn't it meant to be the manager that tells them the tactics and they just follow?

strange word to use intelligence, because football intelligence is not the same thing. I think great footballers do 'intelligent' things instinctively. But intelligence per se is not high with many. Rooney would never have been top of the class in school, nor the likes of Gascoigne before him (a true idiot) but they are (and were) footballing geniuses (or genii).

Rooney is keen to play all the time and was chasing back to get the ball, he was being enthusiastic and showing a desire to grab hold of the game again, fed up of us being under pressure and falling back ever deeper (typical england under pressure). he tried but failed as his efforts to do something about it back fired.

In many ways it was possily a lack of genuine intelligence not football intelligence that really cost us. Or more kindly youthful exhuberance over experience. Kevin Keegan was lambasted at Euro 80. We lost to Italy 1:0 and Keegan's man marker scored because Keegan was deep in our area trying to get the ball back.

Robson is wrong to publicly criticise the guy for trying.
