Yeah I just seen this on the internet.

Quote:

Reeling Manchester United stars were said to be “in shock” last night after a
team-mate was arrested on suspicion of rape.

Defender Jonny Evans, 19, was being held in custody in the city.

He presented himself to police after jetting back into Manchester Airport following
a day-trip to Monaco, thought to be pre-arranged and with a relative.

A police spokesman said last night: “Detectives investigating a report of rape at a
Manchester city centre hotel have arrested a 19-year-old. He was arrested on
suspicion of rape this evening after presenting himself to police. He remains in
custody.”

Police began an investigation after a 26-year-old woman claimed she had been
attacked at the Red Devils’ Christmas party.

She was yesterday taken to a hospital’s sexual assault referral centre, where she
was examined by medics.

She gave a brief statement to cops before being allowed home and will be more
thoroughly interviewed today.

Some United aces headed to the Christmas do at Manchester’s Great John Street
Hotel after a marathon drinking session.

They started Monday lunchtime at the city centre’s 235 casino, where they had a
flutter and lunch.

They moved to The Grapes pub for a sing-song and some paid a brief visit to a
lapdancing bar.

They turned up at the hotel where the champagne was flowing.

Each United player had been allowed to take a set number of guests.

The swanky venue, where rooms cost between £235 and £395, was hired
exclusively for the party by the Premier League soccer giants.

Nearly 100 girls were there, some of whom had travelled hundreds of miles to
attend.

One male guest said: “I spoke to one stunner who had come up from London and
another who had travelled from Newcastle.

“They were gorgeous — it was wall-to-wall babes. Most were aged between 18
and 30 and some were throwing themselves at the players.

“The booze was really flowing. Waitresses were handing out pink champagne to
whoever wanted it. And the players seemed to be knocking back beer, vodka
and whisky.” The guest described the do as a “great party”.

He said star striker Wayne Rooney and defender Rio Ferdinand spent most of it
on the dance floor.

But he added: “Ryan Giggs stole the show when he did an Elvis Presley
impression.”

Police were called to the hotel at 4.15am yesterday.

It is the second year the Christmas bash has been held there.

Last year, the team ran up a £43,000 bar bill and the hotel was damaged by
guests. Old Trafford bosses were furious after an expensive painting was ripped
off a wall and ornaments were destroyed.

Evans, whose full first name is Jonathan, made his first team debut for United in a
Carling Cup defeat against Coventry in September.

He played in their 4-0 Champions League win over Dynamo Kiev last month and in
the 1-1 draw at Roma in the same competition last week.

He has been a regular for Northern Ireland for a year and turned out in their 1-0
away defeat to Latvia in August in the European Championship qualifiers.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson raved about his potential last year and said: “He’s
got a wonderful temperament.

“He’s quick, he reads the game and he has a good technique on the ball. He’s got
everything.”

Me too. How long are you looking at for rape if found guilty?

Obviously depends somewhat on the circumstances, but it would be years 2/3? presuming it is considered non violent and not premeditated.

Rape is very serious sense. In Ireland today, a case where a guy was jailed for 3 years was challenged to the supreme court where the sentence was deemed too lienient and he got 10 years.

I do agree Ricky, I'm not making light of it. I just feel that if there is any substance in this the lawyers will work the angle saying she was there under her own free will, she initiated it, didn't say no etc. Pure guesswork of course, I've no idea what happened.

I guess the image we imagine about rape is the guy in the mask jumping out on someone in a quiet park and forcing himself on her at knife point. Figures (maybe 90%+) suggest that it mainly occurs between people who know each other.

If he is guilty they should throw the book at him, if he isn't and she's made it up then they should throw the book at her.

We've discussed before how part of the problem is that football players get used to people (including pretty girls) fawning over them and start to believe they are something special.

Obviously I don't know Jonny Evans but that picture in the papers today shows one player totally blocked by another but of those you can see, there's Rio, Carrick, Neville, Scholes, Brown and O'Shea. Jonny Evans is just in the background but visible. Was he thinking that he wanted to be like them? a little envious of how they are treated and thought that some of their magic might rub off on him? I don't know, I just hope she's made it up.

Have'nt read anything about the situation, only what was on sky sports news, i'll refuse to read about the situation in newspapers as to be honest, it's all speculation, nobody has been charged or anything like that and from what i've heard was reported a 19 yr old presented himself at the Police Station (which, in my view is very commendable and indicates that person has nothing to hide)

It is as you say an ugly side to been a modern professional footballer, people you dont know and prob don't want to know hanging out, throwing themselves at you, demanding attention.

I know that the person involved may have been young and as you say may have been envious of attention that other players had, but as you say thats just speculation. However, everybody has a choice as well, wheter to be centre of attention or to be happy to be in the background.

Manchester United starlet Evans denies rape claim at 'wild' Christmas party
Last updated at 13:07pm on 19.12.07
Manchester United footballer Jonny Evans was being questioned today over the alleged rape of a woman at the club's Christmas party.

The 19-year-old was arrested yesterday following the party at the Great John Street Hotel in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police were called to the hotel at 4.15am yesterday following reports that a 26-year-old woman had been raped.

Evans was accused of attacking a 26-year-old woman at the £4,000-a-head bash on Monday, attended by players including Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand.

He voluntarily attended a police station after flying home from Monaco yesterday, where he had been on a day trip with a relative.

Evans spent last night in custody and was today due to be quizzed by officers over the alleged attack.

Evans is seens as an up-and-coming star at Manchester United

The alleged victim, who gave police a brief statement following her claim, was also due to be interviewed fully today.

The 26-year-old dialled 999 from a hotel where players including Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand took part in a late-night drinking session.

Evans is a young squad member who plays at international level for Northern Ireland, was arrested on suspicion of rape after presenting himself for questioning.

He remains in custody and is said to strongly deny any wrongdoing.

Today the full horror of the party was revealed as players were said to be out of control after a 13-hour drinking session.

Women at the party complained of being treated like "pieces of meat in a cattle market atmosphere".

The rape allegation, which came hours after Fabio Capello was unveiled as the new England manager, is another blow to the tarnished reputation of football.

Manchester United stars are said to be "stunned" by the teenage player's arrest.

The players had reportedly paid £100,000 for Monday's party and invited around 100 girls back to the £395-a-night Manchester hotel.

The event is said to have been organised by Ferdinand who is reported to have held a whip round to which 25 players gave £4,000 each. Wives and girlfriends were not invited.

The alleged victim was there with her boyfriend.

The venue, Great St John Street Hotel, which overlooks the Coronation Street set, was closed yesterday as police removed potential evidence.

Girls gather outside the hotel and mingle with Manchester United players at their Christmas party on Monday night

A reporter who claimed to be at the party gave a lurid account of the players' antics.

Sarah Tetteh said Wayne Rooney came over to her and a friend, perched himself on the end of their sofa and asked a series of lewd questions.

Rooney allegedly said: "I bet you two were naughty at uni.

"Did you do threesomes? You know two girls and a lad?"

He reportedly added: "You can be Beyonce (the American singer)", before pulling Ms Tetteh up to dance while he sang along to the music.

Ms Tetteh said the players were slowly working their way through the crowd of women and grabbing dance partners and lifting up their skirts.

Later on there was karaoke and Rooney did a rendition of Mustang Sally.

But the mood changed when full back Daniel Simpson allegedly got in a fight with another reveller and had to cool off outside for a while.

Ms Tetteh also claimed one of the club's stars repeatedly pestered a woman and tried to pull her off to a toilet before a security guard stepped in.

A policewoman leaves the hotel yesterday morning - it closed following the rape claim

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was not present, is said to have reluctantly approved the day-long celebrations but ordered his team to be on their best behaviour.

A total of 35 players, including many multi-million pound stars, began the day with lunch at the Manchester235 casino complex where they were entertained by drag queens and dancers.

They arrived by team coach and were photographed walking to the venue, dressed in smart shirts, jeans and jackets.

They ate a £19.50 Christmas menu of home-cured salmon, roast turkey with apricot and pistachio stuffing and baked white cheesecake.

After three hours, stars such as Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Owen Hargreaves, accompanied by junior squad members, headed to Coronation Street star Liz Dawn's pub The Old Grapes for more drinking.

Later a group including Rooney and Ferdinand drove to a lapdancing club but left without going inside after seeing photographers outside.

For the night they had booked out the 30-suite Great St John Street Hotel - a converted Victorian school featured in top hotel guides - where they continued partying into the early hours.

One female guest described the party as "a horrendous cattle market"

She said: "I like the United players but they were out of control. They were treating girls like pieces of meat.

"We got special invites but if we ever get asked again there's no way we would go again."

Another said: "A lot of the players were really letting their hair down. Waitresses were handing out pink champagne to whoever wanted it.

"The players seemed to be drinking beer, vodka and whisky. Lots of drink was flowing and there were a lot of the girls there simply trying to bag a footballer for the night. It was all very sleazy.

"Rooney and Rio spent most of the night on the dance floor - but Giggs stole the show when he did an Elvis Presley impersonation."

The accused player was last night facing the prospect of a police investigation as detectives prepared to take a statement from the alleged victim.

Following the phone call to police she was taken to a specialist sexual assault referral centre at St Mary's Hospital, where staff trained in counselling examined her and preserved any evidence that could be used in a future prosecution.

A police insider said: "She was at the party with her boyfriend but got really drunk and at some point disappeared off with [the player]. When she came back he asked where she'd been, and she claimed she'd been raped."

Manchester United refused to comment yesterday, and the hotel management would only say they were helping police with their inquiries.

Evans made his first team debut in September and has been a regular in the Northern Ireland squad for a year.

He gained nine GCSEs, all at A or A* grade.

Police said later that a 19-year-old man had been arrested in connection with the case. It is the latest in a series of sex assault claims against Premiership footballers. Most of the cases have ended without a prosecution.

Two years ago Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo was arrested over claims that he raped a woman at a London hotel. The Portuguese star, who was not at Monday's party, was not charged.

Arsenal's Dutch striker Robin van Persie was held for two days accused of raping a beauty queen in Rotterdam in 2005, although the case was later thrown out.

The year before that, Leicester City's Paul Dickov, Keith Gillespie and Frank Sinclair were accused of assaulting three women during a training trip to the La Manga complex in Spain.

All charges were dropped. And in 2003, Titus Bramble, then of Newcastle United, and Chelsea's Carlton Cole were arrested over an alleged gang rape on a 17-year-old former convent schoolgirl at a London hotel, but no charges were brought.

Hmmm, all we are doing is speculating but having read this post I find it significant that the claimants boyfriend was there but very drunk. She slips off to Evan's room and when she reappears faces a furious boyfriend and shouts rape to cover her own indiscretions.

Speculation, but the fact that her boyfriend was also at the party is significant IMO.

I'll bet quite a few of the other players re now in the pungent with their own WAGs. I hope they have settled down and can focus before Sunday's game.
