BERBATOV: Ferguson out to temp Tottenham

SIR Alex Ferguson has fired the opening shots in the battle to lure Dimitar Berbatov to Old Trafford in January.

The Manchester United boss is understood to have offered Louis Saha and Wes Brown – plus £6million – in a bid to tempt Tottenham into selling £25m-rated striker Berbatov.

Ferguson’s offer is unlikely to appeal to Spurs because they could pick up Brown for free in the summer when his contract expires, while Saha’s career has been blighted by a terrible injury record.

But the news that United are back in for Berbatov will further unsettle the Bulgaria star, whose hopes of moving to Old Trafford last summer were thwarted.

Since then, Berbatov’s form has dipped noticeably and many observers are linking this directly to the effect of the overtures from the Premier League champions.

The two clubs have been in talks since the summer over a potential move for Berbatov, but keep hitting hurdles.

Spurs have told United they want Nani, who they missed out on last summer, to be part of any swap deal. Ferguson, however, wants to keep the Portugal winger he sees as a long-term replacement for Ryan Giggs.

Defender Brown has refused United’s final offer of a new deal and can leave as a free agent this summer. Saha has been cursed by injuries since his £12.8m move from Fulham four years ago.

He has played only 78 Premier League games for United and scored 25 goals. But this season his strike-rate is lower, with just two goals from 14 matches.

His unreliability leaves United short of cover for Carlos Tevez and Wayne Rooney as they pursue the Treble that eluded them last season.

Good deal in my view. Browns contract is up and Saha is probably never going to be 100% , not reliable. We would have to go after Hutton or another RB then too..

Definately not going to happen in January. With Spurs and United in the knockout stages of Europe it makes no sense. United would be letting 2 players go, and siging a player ineligable for Europe

I still think Wes Brown will sign a new contract and therefore the deal is not that good. Saha is fit again and is also a suitable backup striker (which he doesn't seem to have a problem with) which I can't see Berbatov settling for. And I think berbatov's value has gone down since the summer so overall is it really a good deal?

If we were to go for a striker I'd much rather united paid 10 mill for Anelka, he's much more consistent and better value for money.

Brown will be going nowhere in January. Neville still injured and the young back up is Jonny Evans. If Fergie was planning something like this then he'll be spitting feathers now.

I think that we can safely say that this is a wild stab in the dark by the newspapers. There's no way it would happen and I wouldn't want Berbatov anyway after how he has been this season.

I think he could still play in the C/L if he has played in the uefa, could be wrong on this though. Good deal for Saha, not sure id want Brown to go though.

If nothing else, Brown is excellent cover, although when he is playing well he could grace any defence in the Premiership, just a question of consistency. Berbatov hasn't been firing on all cylinders but there'd be no shortage of service at United.

Aye he probably would score more at United, it's his moods I worry about.

Ramos says he wont sell Berbatov in January - relief.

red thru and thru.
this could be a RED herring :cheeky: thrown by utd, maybe fergie has his eye on some other player but doesnt want to allert anyone else in case the price goes up especially if chelsea get involved  .
i like berbatov but isnt he in a simmilar vein to rooney/tevez, when we should be going for a more direct or out and out striker.
