Who would you prefer Bilton? Neither of those two hopefully Monu. It all depends what he considers his first 11. Owen didn't start the last match and I don't think he's captain material anyway. I don't think he should even be Newcastle captain, nevermind England. |

Just to be controversial, is a a good idea to have a captain who was banned from playing for 8 months over drug test related offenses? What sort of signal does that send out? |

Well to be honest it sends out a signal that no matter where you are in life you can always pick yourself up and be handed an opportunity if you work hard and believe. only the haters harp on about the drugs test yes he forgot a drugs test he made a mistake. have you never made a mistake? theres my point have you done something before you shouldn't of course you have were you forgiven for it of course you were. since the drugs test fiasco rio has been the ultimate professional both on and off the pitch. Im not his biggest fan because he held united to ransom after the club stuck by him. But he deserves the chance and your only upset because this will push terry out. |

Remember he didn't fail the drugs test he passed it 24 hours later. It was arrogance from him and Utd and all the FA's (FA, UEFA, FIFA) wanting to put Utd in their place that led to an 8 month ban. 12 months earlier 3 playersin Italy got 3 months for failing drugs tests. Anyway since then he has become a model professional, on the pitch, had a couple of dubious things off it (not least the Utd Christmas party). Agree Gerrard is a good captain but I still think he has the toughest International job of all in terms of his fight for a start against Frank Lampard. If the papers are to be believed both play in a midfield 5 tonight with FL as one of the two holding midfielders (wtf ). Gerrard is not a certain starter long term (though he'd be my AM pick if both are on top form).Owen? yeah right! not a captain anyway and forwards, like keepers, are often in the wrong position to do it. Rio has played well for 2/3 years and has more to offer in international games. Terry is a no nonsense leader but prone to unacceptably aggressive stand offs with refs (like Chelsea are generally these days..and I know utd under keane were prone too). I think Capello is making a point to Terry that his style is unacceptable and that he has until the Summer to show improvement or he won't be considered long term. At the end of the day Rio becomes Hobson's choice, it'll be interesting to see if he keeps it come the summer. I agree though it's the sort of thing that will lift him personally so I am pleased.

I think so too, he's hardly the model professional both on and off the pitch. He's not even played that great when he's been captain tbh. Who is Hobson? Capello has said that it was his decision to appoint Rio and nobody elses as he can make decisions for himself. The drugs test thing is in the past now. Rio served his punishment and came back a better player, probably wasn't even guilty anyway. |

I'm really pleased that Cappello went for Rio, one of the downfalls of McClaren was the media. He wanted them on side, he ditched David Beckham and then brought him back when the media wanted him. With the media saying Terry and Gerrard to get captaincy, it's good to see he wants to try things diffrently and go for him. |

Don't know if you really want to know but Hobson's Choice refers to having no choice at all, ie this or nothing. Hobson's Choice has historical references (17th century) to a guy called Hobson who used to rent out his horses, however he apparently rented them out in order, ie first person got number 1 the second number 2 etc, so even though it appeared that you might have a choice of horse to rent at the end of the day you got the one assigned to you by number, ie no choice at all. The expression was used as the title of a play, later made more famous by a 1950's (I think) film, which stars Charles Lawton (anyway it's B&W, so you won't ever have seen it Flak). Hobson's Choice was a well enough known expression to become cockney rhyming slang for 'Voice'. as in "....lost mi 'Obson's". Here endeth today's lesson. |

Can i ask a question & excuse my ignorance please, but why does the Captaincy of the English National team generate so much media attention be it printed, news channels etc.... As in, is it really that big of a deal? I mean I could'nt give a damn if Given, Dunne, or Robbie Keane were captain of the ROI |

Thanks for the explanation. Here was little old me thinking Hobson was somebody at the FA. That's because they are all rubbish Ricky. :ph43r: You really want the person most deserving of being captain don't you? It's difficult to pick between the Irish 3 because they all perform to a good level and are decent behaviour wise on and off the pitch. It's not the same story with the England players unfortunately... |

Capello made it clear from the start that he would be looking at different options. Terry next up, but besides him, Ferdinand and Gerrard there aren't any regulars who fit the bill. Was tempted to say Barry but not an automatic starter. As for Terry p*ssing in a cup, Capello may take a dim view but that incident won't be the casting vote, unless Terry gives the tabloids further fodder. Clinton gave Monica Lewinsky's dress a respray and he survived to tell the tale. |

I don't buy the whole 'he made a mistake' crap - a mistake is 'oh look, i bought the wrong milk' not 'oh dear, i have forgotten about this massively important event that may determine what happens in my career.' I also don't agree that people should be called role models for picking themselves up from a negative situation of their own making - how about people who are professional about their careers from the beginning? Having said all that, I don't think what happened with the drugs test was big enough to cause so much controversy now - if Rio is captain it's because he plays well (dammit), gets on with his job and knows to keep his ugly face out of the media. |
