What about Ice-T. Not trendy anymore but still one of the best, he used old funk and soul records as his beats and rapped about the ganster lifestyle but also talked about the flipside (gettin shot, locked up).

My fave was Ol Dirty B@st@rd. His style was just so unique and lax. The rhymes just rolled outta his mouth and he had a wicked sense of humour. Shame he was mentally ill.

Nah he wasnt. He was still in nappys when Ice T made his first album rapping about crime and money. Ice cube only came onto the scene with NWA, and Dre was in a band with Coolio before he formed NWA.

Well '6 in tha morning' came out in '86 and is widely accepted as the first ever gansta rap record (it was actually SchoolyD-PSK), whereas 'Straight outta compton' (and 'f*** tha police') came out in '88 and got a placing in the billboard charts which meant it was definately more popular.
So there :P

Where did you read it? I just knew this cause im sad and was mad into hip hop while growing up. If you are going to nit pick it wasnt untill 90 that Ice Cube had a solo album out but Ice T's '87 album was the first gangsta rap record to go gold, and he got another one with 88's power

I read it as in 1986 I was 6. NWA was the first music I listened to as it was mainstreamn stuff

well I was actually originally talking about style/flow-Ice Cube was the first angry/ gangster rapper and is credited along with NWA of creating the sound by most hip-hop people, although technically as you pointed out ICE-T was first guy to rap gangsterish

Thats all I was lookin IGB :D

DMC from RUN DMC was a great rapper too. His rhymes and delivery were class.

"I am the king of rock,
there aint none higher,
sucker MC's should call me sire,
I wont stop rockin' till I retire,
to burn my kingdom you must use fire!"

".. rhymes so cool, rhymes rhymes galore,
rhymes that you never even heard before,
now if you say you heard my rhymes, we gonna have to fight,
'cause I just made the muthaf*kas up last nite!"

Pure class B)

I really like snoopdoggs rapping style, his lyrics are a completely different matter though.... I'm not that big on Rap. I do know two funny stories about Snoop dog and the Game. The Game was at this destival in Belgium where I was, and his performance was a disgrace. A funny disgrace though. He did about two songs, and then he had to show he was a macho. He drank down a bottle of liquor in one go, after that one of his 'Homies' handed him a bottle of champagne, with a withering look he took that bottle too and drank it down as well. After that he tried to start a song but then suddenly ran (quite wobbly) off stage and did not return....
When Snoop Dog did his first gig in Holland, he smoked a joint of prime white widow. Mister I smoke joints all day, didn't take it well. It took the best part of an hour and a lot of 7up (sugar helps against THC) before he was able to perform. :D :D
