The English teams don't play fast counter attacking football in the Champions League either because it doesn't work.

why doesnt it work then ?

Playing 4-4-2 has something to do with it. Hardly any of the top Champions League teams play with two strikers upfront anymore.

Don't Utd play 442 at home for most Champions League Games? I think England should play 442 in most home qualifiers and consider the opposition away, we shoudln't be getting beat by Croatia at Wembley and drawing with Minnows away. If we play Italy or France away I can understand it.

I agree with Norwich, we just don't play with enough pace to really trouble most teams but I believe we have the players to do so.

we need to get the national team playing at premiership pace imo

should be quite easy seeing as everyone of them plays in the premiership

You'd think so but it's not about how many England players play in the Premiership - it's because of the Premiership players that AREN'T in the England team... as in, the foreigners.
English players are battling players for the simple reason that they don't have much in the way of flair and creativity. Grit is all they're left with but that can only get you so far. Once the foreigners of the league aren't involved, we're left with 45 boring minutes of England battling their way past USA with some rather dull football.

The odd time depending on who is available. It's normally 4-5-1 though. They should try and play whatever way is best to win. That may sound obvious but under the previous managers England seem to have been lacking creating goalscoring opportunities against the better sides.

The foreigners are what hold the Premiership teams together? :S They do seem to have better quality on the ball and better ball retention.

I don't think it's just about the foreigners but I think it's about the good combination they form with the English players (and the other players from the home nations). Man Utd have the best team right now because they effectively mix the two - boring English players who can be relied on to do their job well because they don't have much else to offer with the flair of players like Ronaldo and Nani. Even Rooney looks more creative playing on the same team as Tevez and Ronaldo.

the big question for me is why are england playing, usa and trinidad & tobago, while the usa are as well as playing england play argentina, is it a case of the english f.a. knowing england arent good enought to play the top nations so they arrange friendleys they can win, while the usa plan games where they will be tested to the limit and help them improve, i think its proof the f.a. need a complete clear out

Agreed the english side need to get some pride back, havent got much at the minute

Good point. Like when we played Jamaica. We thrashed them because they were rubbish. Once the whistle blew to start the game, their players disappeared quicker than curried goat and rice at a Kingston street party.

Yet the media acted like we'd just whooped Argentina and all of a sudden, it was England's time to win a major trophy. We don't prepare or push ourselves enough.

The English are playing these games because they would have originally been looking at warm up games before the Euro 2008 comp. Hence USA travel over here.

We are playing Trinidad and Tobago over there because the corrupt head of the Carribean FA, whose name is escapes me, hates England and has led anti English support against them getting the 2006 WC and the 2010 WC, Once again we are vying for the 2018 and this is an olive branch from what he calls arrogant England to try and garner his support for our 2018 bid. So it's all political really and I don't think he will change his anti-english stance but the FA are trying.
