Scotland To Host Euro 2012?

SCOTLAND could step in to host the European Championships in 2012 after current hosts Poland and the Ukraine were warned they have a month to intensify their efforts in getting ready for the tournament.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith revealed today that he has asked Michel Platini to consider Scotland as an alternative location for Euro 2012.

His comments come after UEFA president Michel Plantini warned Polish and Ukrainian officials following his last visit to the venues in February, that they had until his next assessment to increase their efforts at upgrading stadia, accomodation and transport services.

And with Platini due to visit the countries early next month, Scotland has emerged as a potential replacement should they fail to meet his criteria.

"All we asked for was that we would like to be considered should they not be given the tournament or the tournament be taken away from them," Smith told Radio Scotland.

"That's where we left it with Michel Platini but to find out we are favourites if Poland and Ukraine don't is quite a shock, because we would still have to look at the whole scenario and see whether we could do it."

The Ukraine and Poland proved a surprise choice last year, beating Italy for the right to host the next European Championships in four years time, but the countries are still some way from the eight required stadiums being up to standard.

Currently Scotland currently has just four stadia which meet the criteria to host a European Championship - Ibrox, Hampden, Celtic Park and Murrayfield - and it's previous bid to host Euro 2008 was made jointly with the Republic of Ireland.

"The president will be there in July and then he will make a statement," a UEFA spokesman said.

"For the time being, we are fully concentrated on Euro 2008

If it did happen, they could still host it with us because by then wee'd have two proper stadiums. But knowing the GAA they wont allow it in Croker <_<

But I think its highly unlikely they'll take it off Ukraine and Poland.

Scotland would have the infrastructure because the 2010 Commonwealth games are in Glasgow. We are short of 4 stadiums of which Aberdeen and Dundee would provide 2. Of the 2 needed we have to look outside Scotland IMO and I think we should ask Wales, if not then Newcastle & Sunderland sound like a good solution.

Can't see it happening with England hosting the Olympics the same year. Maybe it's a mistype and really it's the caber tossing event of the olympics being held there?

If there was any chance of that happening, surely what happened in Manchester a month or so ago would blow that out of the water. Have Scotland got 4 grounds that would qualify, bearing in mind that they would prob only use 1 in Glasgow so would need to find 3 others outside Glasgow??????????

Hampden, Ibrox & Celtic Park (All Glasgow) would be allowed and Murrayfield in Edinburgh.
The Olympics being in London would have no bearing on the decision and they are a month or so later anyway.

that was meant to be built by now.lazy builders started that about 5 years ago or something.

ireland only have one real stadium (lansdowne road) and the gaa wouldnt let croker be used for football because that deal that the fai and the gaa was to end once the new lansdowne road was finished.

Hampden, Ibrox & Celtic Park (All Glasgow) would be allowed and Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Wouldn't that mean too many people in Glasgow at once?

I doubt it will be taken off Poland and Ukraine now, it's just being used to give them a kick up the Arsene.
