Currently Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant manager at Manchester United, Queiroz seems to be the red hot favourite to succeed Luiz Felipe Scolari in charge of the Portuguese national team.

Record says that Queiroz, who is on holiday in Mozambique, has not received any offer as of yet, as the Portuguese federation will only hold negotiations after Euro 2008.

The appointment of Queiroz would represent his return to the Portuguese national squad after an unsuccessful stint from 1991 to 1994.

He also led United Arab Emirates and South Africa before joining Ferguson at Old Trafford, and of course had an infamous year at Spanish giants Real Madrid where a late season collapse saw them end trophyless, as they would remain in the following two seasons.

The 55-year-old is in the running to replace Ferguson as Manchester United coach once the Scottish veteran decides to retire from management.

I'm not cnvinced he'd be a good replacement for Fergie when he retires tbh. If he was offered the job I reckon he'd take it.

Unbelievable, there is no doubt in my mind that Queiroz is the best successor to Fergie. If you honestly believe that the successes of the last 2 seasons (especially the CL) is in no large part down to him you are mistaken. And knowing that fergie's gonna retire in a couple of years, Queiroz will be mad to leave OT now, and I don't think he will.

Cantona? He's never even managed a pub team.

Would Portugal want him back if he failed last time he was their manager? Long time ago I know but managers don't normally get asked back a second time.

I agree with Treble, Fergie's replacement....he'd be mad to leave now and damage his chances of that.

Would Mourinho go and manage Portugal now that he's got the Inter job? There's no difference...

Mourinho kept saying he's too young for international management... if he ever goes to manage Portugal it won't be from a small club anyway.

There is a big difference actually.Mourinho would be favourite for any job availible, could you say that about Queiroz? No. Why wait two years to just have a chance at the united job when he could mange his country.

In his position, waiting for one of the top club jobs which at present he stands an excellent chance of getting. Somebody that knows the club inside out, he's not going to have the opportunity if he goes off managing Portugal.

But your previous post said why would he not take the Portugal job? So why wouldn't Mourinho? Because the national job isn't always the most desired depending on the individual and where they are in their managerial career.

Queiroz is favourite to get the United post after Fergie. For starters he'll have fergie's backing, secondly he wouldn't be waiting for the portugal job he would leave anyway if he didn't believe he was gonna get the United job.

i think that he should leave us and manage portugal and in 2010 after the wc go back to man utd for fergie last year. he will be favorite if he will leave becuse he is portugese like ronaldo and nani and he will have fergie and charlton backing.

i think he is a good coach but i would prefer someone with an exprience and success at a top club and he dont have it

I'm sorry but this is the sort of dumb ass thinking that gets loads of clubs in trouble.

Of this list, Hughes yes, but I believe he's just got a new job.

Keane, please let's wait and see.

Cantona? Isn't he a film star? I love him as an iconic ex-player and the supportive stuff he does and says but it's like gambling all your money on one number in roulette.

Increasingly I think Quieroz would be a good successor, I think he leads the real coaching and as someone else pointed out, it's him who helps us get (and hopefully keep) Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson.

Personally I don't think SAF's successor will last long because it will be a hell of a burden following him.

I also think Luis Philipe Scolari would have been a good choice for us. But let's not pick an ex player just because they have passion for the club. SAF never played for us!

Quieroz may be one of these guys who make a great No2, like Brian Kidd and Steve McClaren. Look what happened to those two when they tried to make the step up to full management, although to be fair to McClaren he did ok with Boro considering the limited resources at his disposal.

But Skid I followed him throughout his season at Real Madrid and they played good football and up until the end of March led the La Liga by 8 points. They also got to the final of the Copa Del Rey and the game could have gone either way. It was only player politics and the then president undermining his team selection that screwed up th end of their season. He isn't a MacLaren, he has the ability to step up to management.
