Boys I knew a bit about this happening, but it was confidential. However as it is common knowledge now, I can probably say a few things. Donington Park will have to extend the track as F1 laps need to be a minimum of 1 min 20 secs. New paddock will have to be built just for F1 And a new grandstand. Plus other things, in all I believe there is an excess of £100m worth of investment going in to Donington Park (no double n's in Donington) to upgrade it to a track worthy of holding F1. Bernie Ecclestone calls all the shots and it is common knowledge how p*ssed off he has been with Silverstone's lack of investment upgrades/progress There's a lot more to change including road infrastructure and access, such as dualling from Jct 23a on the M1. All I assume must now be in place for this to happen and today's announcement to be made. Last week I read in the Times on Monday that MotoGP would move to Silverstone to unite with F1 there because the road infrastructure and access was poor at Donington. Silverstone would get the next 10 year contract to run from 2010. Obviously the reporter didn't have all the facts (even the Times makes mistakes) but I wonder if they've been pinching each others major contracts or whether MotoGP might reconsider if their major concern is about to be alleviated. Interesting times! |

Okay yes, but Monaco is the only venue in the world where Bernie believes they get more from the venue than the venue gets from F1. That is why it has the cheapest contract in the World of F1. Also given the built up nature of the streets it is actually impossible to extend the track there. Well maybe you could build an arc or hairpin out at the side of the harbour but I'm sure they won't insist on it there.
