Great Britain currently has no unified olympic football team. Pressure is growing to have a team when the Olympics come to London as it would seem strange for the host nation not to have one. This creates it's own problems in terms of team selection from England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, but also gives ammunition to those in UEFA and FIFA who have a dislike of the way clubs in the UK play in the various leagues (English League, Scottish League, Welsh League, Northern Ireland League) especially situations where teams from Wales play in the English League, teams from England play in the Scottish League AND even one instance where a Northern Ireland club play in the Irish League  If the UK was able to prepare a GB team for London 2012 this would provide certain people at FIFA and UEFA the ammunition to argue for a single league for the whole of the UK.... On another note some have suggested that if we do establish a football team GB for London 2012, because of it's timing the manager could be Sir Alex Ferguson! |

There are way too many teams to just have one league for the whole UK. There'd be like 6 divisions. ![]() I don't think it's a good idea, the fans don't get on and it wouldn't work if one country had more players in the team than the others. |

We don't need to have one. It may seem strange, but tough boobies. The only thing to do would be to ignore the pro leagues, pick a bunch of amateurs from each different country and try to keep it as equal as possible. |

Imagine amateurs up against the likes of Brazil and Argentina.
Having a GB team is a nice idea but it just wouldn't work. |

Would they bring us any more shame than GB professionals? At least then we'd have a VALID excuse for losing

The whole ideal of the Olympics was that it was meant to be amateurs only..............still is in certain sports. Why should a pro footballer be allowed to enter when a pro boxer isnt???????? Sports like football (at pro level), tennis, Basketball etc shouldnt be in Olympics. Even talk about including golf. |

I agree with RDwarf, although I'm okay with professional athletes (such as sprinters, swimmers etc) being at the Olympics, the only sports there should be ones where the Olympic Gold Medal is the pinnacle of that sport. So no footy, tennis, golf (wtf). Amateur 3 round boxing is okay, but once a pro in that sport the game changes and they shouldn't be allowed back. Basketball should be okay but again once you have turned pro and could play for the whatever trophy it is in the USA then the gold medal is just a bonus, it won't be top of a career aspirations list! |

Agreed: The Olympics shoould be the biggest event in your sport or u should be in it. Tennis: 5 Bigger comps per yr. Football: 1 every 2 yrs. Basketball: 1 Every yr Golf: 4 every yr, plus Ryder cup (but big am golf tour out there, so if they want golf use the ams) |

I actualy think thats a good idea Stacie. Its not very often that players like this get the oppertunity to play in big tournaments anyway. What would the likes of Owen and Gerrard etc have to prove, we have the Euros and World Cup for them to try win medals in. It would also be good for lesser known players to show everyone the skill they might have and could end up with some players making great strides in there football career |

Owen and Gerrard would only play if they were included as some of the over 23s. Rooney, Richards etc. would still qualify though. |
