I can see why they might not let them, but when its to do with International football be it friendly non olympic, or olympic if a player wants to have a bash at a gold medal it is their call, end of the day its all about contracts, if YOU SIGN A 5 YEAR DEAL HONOUR IT **ahem** and if your contract says u cant play at the olympics (which i bet none do) then u dont play. other wise if a player wants to rep his country he should be allowed. Personally i would love to see a britain team.

Well technically they're not obligied to let them go. But I think if the player wants too, which most do, then yeah they should be allowed go.

much as it annoys me i think it should be the players choice myself, they want to represent their country and I think thats fair enough.

End of the day plenty of our rivals lost teams to the African Nations last time round

Both comps have bad timing. ANC though is a proper competition to find the best team in Africa, sort of like the Euro's but I guess it's too hot to play in June/July. Personally as we discussed elsewhere I don't think football should be at the Olympics anyway, the Olympic gold medal should be the pinnacle prize in any sport there (or at least for those taking part). Obviously the biggest prize in International football is the World Cup (more teams enter this comp than the Olympics!), so ask any of these guys which you would prefer......it won't be Olympic gold. Same with tennis, Wimbledon or Olympic gold and sports like golf being added wtf?

I certainly sympathise with clubs not wanting their players to go, they after all pay them, but they shouldn't be put in this position in the first place, IMO. Football shouldn't be a sport at the Olympics or at least not for professionals.

The Olympics will be all about viewing figures though and what better way to get more people watching than including a competition for the most popular sport on the planet?

It should be up to the players deciding if they want to go. Clubs can't stop them from playing normal international football so I don't see why the Olympics should be any different.

Clubs should give the player the choice but shouldn't have to pay them if they choose to go.

Stace that's a great idea, because then they truly would go for the love and honour of it and if they were too greedy they'd come out with my club is more important to me and we'd really get to see how big a deal it is. Clubs I think would like this idea.

They should put it on there then. It's a major footballing competition.

I doubt there'd be many that would stay at the club just because they wont be getting paid for a month.
