Barcelona will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if Fifa asks them to release Argentine forward Lionel Messi for the Olympic Games. The Spanish side are reluctant to let Messi go, but the 21-year-old is keen to play in Beijing and is waiting to hear from Fifa if he can compete. Club president Joan Laporta said on the Barca website: "We are in no doubt that the rules are on our side. "We are not obliged to release the player [for the Games]." Laporta added: "The player wants to defend the interests of both Barcelona and the Argentine national side." Last week, Fifa president Sepp Blatter said clubs must release their eligible players younger than 23 for the Olympic tournament but leading clubs have said they are under no obligation to do so. Whos in the right? |
