Sheff Utd Win Tevez Ruling

An FA arbitration hearing has ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair.
The South Yorkshire club were relegated in a dramatic end to the 2006-07 season.

A Tevez-inspired Hammers beat Manchester United on the final day of the season to clinch top-flight safety at the Blades' expense.

The Premier League fined the Hammers a record £5.5m for fielding Tevez and Javier Mascherano when they were ineligible to play under league rules regarding third-party ownership.

United initially wanted to have their Premier League place reinstated and appealed that the monetary fine was insufficient.

Having failed in that regard they then turned their attentions to achieving a financial settlement.

The club today issued a statement on their official website, www.sufc.co.uk, claiming success in that case, although the exact nature of the compensation is as yet unclear.

Newspaper reports suggest the Blades could be looking for a figure of around £30m, while chairman Kevin McCabe is on record as saying that relegation cost United at least £50m in lost revenues.

McCabe said this morning: "I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling.

"The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour. The matter is still legally in process so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process."

£30m sounds like a lot of dough, but if the panel has decided Utd were relegated cos WHU fielded ineligible players than the figure is surely right.

tbh i hope the fee being banded about is correct and i am pleased for sheff utd that they have got this ruling though i am sure west ham will use every avenue available to them to appeal

as much as sheff utd's whinning became irritating this is a right a just settlement and what i had thought the premiership should have ruled (after wham had already started the following premiership season)

They say the Championship play-off is worth £60m so Sheffield are are probably closer with the £50m they have said.

Its a good decision but Sheffield shoud get £50m. <_<

West Ham should of being docked points and then subsequently relegated in the first place. Wonder why it took 16 months to get a verdict as well??

Sheff United shoud def get at least £30m.

Pleased for Sheffield United although they would probably have preferred to stay in the Premier League. Shame they can't relegate West Ham now with so much time having passed.

i am pleased for sheff utd but i though this was all done and dusted. i agree whu should of got points deducted at the time and that would of stopped all this carry on.

also i think it should be up to the fa or premier league to pay the compensation and not whu. they are the ones that made the mistake and whu have already been punished by them.

Trouble is, a points deduction is of no use to Sheffield United. They are still in the Championship earning less revenue.

Wouldn't they have said a points deduction at the start of the new season? They'd need time to investigate the transfers and all that.

possibly but it would not have effected the team that was making the complaint. i think thats why a points deduction was not given and sheff utd carried on with the arbitration hearing
