Why do we have the likes of Deco playing. The guys name is de Souza, so why does he play under Deco lol same with Pele (Edison Arantes do Nascimento). Can u imagine English players playing with nicknames on back of shirts...........Stuart Pearce (Psycho) for example and being known around the world only by that name
Brazilian Ronaldo..........why does he play just under 1st name????????? Be like Rooney having Wayne on back of shirt. Even United Cristiano Ronaldo is just his 1st 2 forenames????????.......again would be like Rooney being known throughout the world as Wayne Mark WTF lol |

There was a charity set up whereby people could donate any extra names they had to Brazilians so they could have two. they were particularly interested in those people who had double barrelled surnames, eg Catherine Zeta-Jones and at the time heather Mills-McCartney, plus all the dutch guys, Ruud Van Nistelrooy etc, but I think top of the list was the muscles from Brussels as he had two he could donate to these poor Brazilians,.....Jean-Claude van Damme. |

Maybe it's so it doesn't cost fans a fortune to have the name printed on the back of the shirts. Diego and Ronaldinho are another 2. Why are you even thinking about this RD? :P |

Its something i have thought about for quite a while. I would bet u that the % of United fans dont even know what Ronaldo's name is. Same with Chelsea fans re Deco etc. As i said why do they play under part names or nicknames??????? It seems to be most Latin players lol. |

Well I think it's more about that the names they use, are the names they use in daily life... I mean their names are quite a mouthfull... anyway many of their names are baptismal names.... My father and mother both come from catholic families and respectively three and four first names (many of the names in the latin version) My mother first names are Christina Anna Oda Maria.... But her calling name is Stieneke (which is an abbreviation of Christina) I think the same goes for most of the Brazillians... |

Partly yes, but the difference with Brazilian footballers is the name is often not adopted until teenage years. Ronaldinho for example literally means little Ronaldo after the now even larger Brazilian, Ronaldo. So although they have a little more style, many are actually more like nick-names than anything, so Rooney's shirt would have Wazza on. Still that would mean Fitz Hall's shirt would have "One Size" on the back!
