Maybe in England the number 9 has become less important.... But when I look at the dutch competition, we still have plenty of number 9's running around..... |

theres planty of leading top strikers today so i dont see how this role have been declined.. there are teams who dont have a leading striker but theres also teams with no second striker in the first team. ( bayern munich, juventus ) |

Yeah there's still plenty of leading strikers about, United have one in Manucho now as well. The perfect combination is one out and out striker with one support striker. The teams that have the high scoring midfielders normally have a proper defensive midfielder in the side as well to fill in the holes when they go forwards. |

its all to do with tactics imo. there is a lot of excellent number 9's out there but with the evolution of the modern game there having to adapt to a more varied role. its a bit like full backs, the use to be all about defending, being tall and being strong. now they have to be pacy, good at getting forward and they all seem to be shorter |

i would say so flak. when teams attack it will go to 4-2-3-1 and when they defend it becomes a 4-5-1, makes it more of a unit in attack and defence. players have to have a varied skills set then |

You are more likely to get 1 attacking midfielder as well in a 4-5-1 which would explain why they have become more prominent. |

in essence you would have 3 in the middle, 2 defensive/holding midfielders and in the middle of them your attacking midfielder who can just slot in line with them when defending and being free to attack at will without worrying about defensive duties. 4-5-1 can also turn into 4-3-3. then your attacking midfielder becomes more of a cm and your wide players become wide forwards/wingers what ever you want to call them but it will always revert back to the compact 4-5-1 formation when defending. i think this is why rooney may get used wide more than ronaldo because ronaldo doesnt do defending imo |

Maybe this season he will now that there's Berbatov and Manucho, last season he played quite a few games as the lone frontman which he isn't suited too either. That attacking midfield role is for the likes of Lampard and Gerrard so they can concentrate on what they do best, going forwards. |

i think your right there flak, also tho i can see the attacking midfield role being suited for nasri as well. would rooney or ronaldo be suited to that positon for utd? |

Both of them but more so Rooney I think. Ronaldo does his best work out on the wing one on one with the full back really. Com infield and there's less space. |
