Liverpool After Bale

Benitez failed to prise a certain Mr Barry away from Aston Villa in the summer, but The Sun reports that the Spaniard may have another left-footer named Gareth in his squad before too long.

Bale is tipped as one of Britain's hottest prospects, having already worked his way into the starting line-up with Wales despite his tender years.

The 18-year-old was targeted by a host of Premier League clubs last year, with Manchester United initially leading the chase to snare him from Southampton. However, he ended up moving to Spurs in a deal which could total £12million if all add-ons are triggered.

Bale made only a handful of appearances during his first season at White Hart Lane due to a combination of injuries, inexperience and change of management.

The Cardiff native was primed for a breakout campaign after a strong pre-season, with many expecting him to be an integral figure as Juande Ramos' side pushed for Champions League qualification.

But the Lilywhites have endured a terrible start and currently sit bottom of the Premier League, having failed to pick up a single win in their first five games.

Bale has insisted he will not abandon the sinking Spurs, but a number of clubs are nonetheless preparing to throw him a lifeline during the January transfer window.

Liverpool are thought to be at the front of the queue this time around as Benitez hopes to secure a long-term replacement for Fabio Aurelio, the injury-prone Brazilian defender.

The Spanish tactician has made no secret of his desire to lure more left-footers to Anfield now that John Arne Riise has departed. In particular he hopes to spruce up his side's set-pieces, which have become somewhat one-dimensional with Steven Gerrard overseeing most dead-ball situations.

The Reds are also reported to be monitoring Aaron Lennon, meaning they could attempt a double-swoop in the winter.

Wouldn't be a bad buy. Better than what we have at the moment.

He'll be worth it because he is only 19. Unlike Keane it's not really much of a gamble.

They did have the money for him (Barry) but they didn't think he was worth it because he had no resale value.

they brought not other left backs ??

As far as i know hes just won a cap for the full squad , perhaps lack of int experience was the reason why they didnt take him to the euros.

Our purchase of Keane for 20+ million after courting/bidding for Barry should prove that we did indeed have the funds but were not prepared to pay the asking price. :)
