Former Tottenham manager Terry Venables has blamed Dimitar Berbatov for the club's terrible start to the season, describing the Manchester United striker's presence at the beginning of the campaign as "poisonous". The Bulgarian started the season at White Hart Lane but was clear in his desire to realise a 'dream' move to United. Speculation over Berbatov's future dominated Spurs' early matches as manager Juande Ramos wrestled with whether or not to select the striker, who eventually signed for the Red Devils in a £30million deal. With two points from six league matches so far Spurs lie bottom of the table and Ramos is under intense pressure. But Venables, who last week turned down the chance to return to top-flight management with Tottenham's fellow strugglers Newcastle, believes the club's current strife stems from Berbatov. "Berbatov kept telling us he had 'a dream'. Well, good for you Dimi. You had a dream with a few extra noughts added to your bank balance," he told The Sun. "But did Spurs have a dream too? You got your way but your poisonous presence at the start of the season - the brooding and the reluctance to play - has cost the club that believed in you." Can you really blame Berbatov for wanting to leave Spurs for Man Utd? Or for the fact that despite making his wishes known for long enough he was still there at the start of the season? |

yeah its harsh and pointless really. berbatov is not the reason spurs are in such a mess. ramos bought the wrong players in several positions and didnt strength the squad enough and left a few positions very weak when he have the option not to. |

rather harsh... and who is venables to speak out anyway?? Yes Berba probably influenced spurs negatively, but like Flak said somewhere else they easily could've shipped him off earlier... especially since that is what he wanted... Berba's actions were hardly clean, but you have to ask yourself what led him to be a nasty ass? right the fact that spurs didn't sell him off earliers. That does not excuse berba's behaviour. But it was something they could've seen coming from several miles away and they didn't act on it.... |

Yes Berba wanted to leave so just sell him for less than got on the last day. They got an extra 5m and football is all about money and they set their price and did the right thing by sticking to it. |

A little bit harsh but it shows what people in the footballing world think of Berbatov. Don't think you can blame Berbatov for wanting to leave but can you blame Spurs for not wanting to sell their top striker? |

You can't blame any club for not wanting to sell their top striker but if that player makes their intentions so clear and you've already showed weakness in letting one striker leave, how can you expect him to behave before the window shuts? An extra £5m has not helped Spurs at all. In fact, they've hindered themselves by leaving it too late to get a decent start to the season. |

I guess so but i was thinking more about how it seems that spurs were wrong to sell him when they did becuase what Spurs did was good for teams out of the top 4 showing they will set a price and if you don't match it then you won't get the player. |

BTW Why arent we blasting El Tel for talking about things he's had nothing to do with... The berba saga was bad for spurs... But why does that muppet think he has the expertise/right/knowledge to say this??? |

Yeah I don't see how Venables (why is he called El Tel?) thinks this will help anything... Berbatov has been gone for a month and Spurs still look like sh*t. |
