Personally I think Raul should be in the squad, the same way the likes of Totti and Del Pierro still get into the Italian squad. Villa and Torres would probably still start but Raul is a great option to have on the bench or in case of injuries. He's 31 now and it's such a shame that Aragones was a vindictive cu*t for taking a chunk out of Raul's international career. Just wondered what everyone else thought, should he return ot time to move on? |

He might think the subs bench is beyond him. He's not getting any younger so maybe it's time to bring in the youth now anyway. Gweezer and whoever.I think maybe the manager will feel he has to pick him if he's in the squad. Weren't they trying to force a 4-3-3 at one time? |

no he shouldn't, raul has a negative influence in a dressing room and has too big an ego, he was responsible for alot of the real managers getting sacked including scushter who btw shares the same agent as ramos |

Raul would partner Villa/Torres much better than Guiza would. (Guiza is 28 btw) They have Mata in their now too, I can't see him getting a call up tbh. |

Definitely not. It's not a casualty that the first competition in which spanish team did not involve Raul, they made a great result. Raul was a really great player, but now, they have Torres and Villa upper in the rotation and i'm sure that he doesn't accept to be in the bench in the most of the games, and you had to see the pressure that the press from Madrid made on Aragones when he didn't put Raul in the list of the National Team. Now, the Spanish team has a captain accepted for all the members of the roster like a leader and not for the things that he did in the past, he is Casillas and the appear of Raul in the team probably start a fight for the power that doesn't make anything good at the team. In a sportive way, Raul hasn't got place in this team, he hasn't the speed and the technique to play in the team (Güiza either, but he was on a row the last year), and he is not a 9. He's a second striker (i don't know if this is the word for the player who plays like a striker but he fall to the wings and to the midfield to get the ball, like Del Piero) and the team plays with two 9 like Villa and Torres, the both of them can make the work of a 9 and the work of a second striker, and the other places in the roster for strikers should be (in my opinion) for players with different profiles, like Mata (the future of the national team), Llorente (both of them) or a player in a row like Güiza the last year. It's neccesary remember that spanish team used to play with 2 strikers, but when they have to change the tactic, the most common is that they put out 1 striker and put in a midfiedler like Cesc to play with a creation line with Xavi,Iniesta,Silva and Cesc. |

Do you think that Raul has a negative influence on the squad then? I don't think Torres works that well with Villa, do you think playing one of them would be better or perhaps Villa alongside another striker? I like the lookof both Llorentes. Is Mata in the senior squad or is he still in the U21s? |

Yes, i'm sure that Raul has a negative influence in the team quemistry. He used to have a lot of power in Real Madrid and i don't think that he accept in a good way be a bench player. In Spain there is a rumor involving that Raul and Casillas are not the best friends in the world because Casillas is starting to be the natural leader of Real Madrid and Raul doesn't accept this in a good way, but Raul for now is very powerful in the Real Madrid locker room because other of the veterans and big heights in the team (2 of the 4 captains, the other 2 are Raul and Casillas) like Michel Salgado and Guti are friends of him and they 3 togheter are a strong front in the team by now. Torres and Villa have very good things when they play togheter, both of them can go to a wing to open the field and to receive the ball while the other is in the 9 position, they make a good pressure and all over, they 2 can make a goal oportunity by himself, they both are lethal in a counterstrike for their speed and have a good feeling between each other. The question of what is better is a good question, the problem is that the team has a great way of play right now with a creation line full of midfiedlers, and the only spanish player that could change the system for his talent would be Valeron (the best making the last pass with De La Peña of Spain), but he is far far away from the National Team level and i'm sure that he never will be again in the National team, so now i think that the 2 strikers system is the best for the team. I think that Mata is in the sub21 squad now, but i'm sure that he is going to be in the World Cup list. |

There was also suggestions that he got Schuster sacked and was an influence in Ramos getting the Real Madrid job? I don't think Torres does enough work though. Yes he scored goals in the Euros 2008 but I don't think he played that well. Would Fernando Llorente or Mata not work better with Villa because they do more work than Torres and can play the second striker postion better than him I think? Is Torres playing the full 90 minutes under Del Bosque? Becuase Aragones always took him off in the 2nd half of games... Lafita has been playing well, could he get a call-up in the next squad?

This is a fascinating debate! For me Del Bosque isn't right to bring Raul back. I have been a life long admirer of Raul the player. I believe at his peak he was the top attacker in europe. While Zidane and Figo were establishing themselves in Real's team Raul was still the main man. Lacked pace and power but his intelligence and skill made him great. Now though with Torres and Villa and a host of youngsters like Mata, Bojan and Llorente coming through and Raul not getting any younger his absence isn't sorely missed. The only use Raul would serve in that squad is that he would be seen as an experienced figure in the changing room. Unfortunately for Raul, he's not that figure. He's a player who demands a say in how everything is run, he forms a clique around him and they fall in behind causing in camp rows. I believe the reason that Spain won the Euros, bar having the best group of players in the world, is because they were finally a unit. No "Old Guard" as Luis Aragones called them i.e. Raul, Salgado, Helguera etc. Now, if Spain are the best team in Europe, and probably the world, why bring in a potentially destructive influence? Maybe Del Bosque has a soft spot for Raul?? |
