when was the last time you did something for the first time??
Forbes magazine has released a top 10 list of the most valuable sports franchises in the world. While it is mostly made up of American gridiron Football (NFL) and American Baseball (MLB) teams, there are three European association football teams in there and Arsenal is one of them.

Man Utd (EPL): $1.8bn
Dallas Cowboys (NFL): $1.6bn
Washington Redskins (NFL): $1.5bn
New England Patriots (NFL): $1.32bn
New York Yankees (MLB): $1.3bn
Real Madrid (La Liga): $1.29bn
Arsenal (EPL): $1.2bn
New York Giants (NFL): $1.18bn
New York Jets (NFL): $1.17bn
Houston Texans (NFL): $1.17bn
The Forbes article states that Arsenal took in $329 million in revenue last year—also mentioning the pricing of club level seats and private boxes at Emirates Stadium and the value of the stadium naming rights.

Television revenue, advertising sponsorship, fan merchandising, and revenue-producing assets like stadiums and match day receipts are fueling these valuations.

Clearly, the earning power of these clubs is very healthy which bodes well for any spending plans that they have. Who needs billionaire owners when you generate that much economic wealth on your own? Ok, that might make Man Utd. a bit of a contradiction, but it bodes well for Arsenal's business model.

Now Arsenal needs the on-pitch performance to match such lofty heights.

According to my calculations the problem doesn't exist

hmm i though i heard it was top (which surprised me as well). maybe i misread it and it was just the most popular in the US. which admittedly make more sense.

Regardless it still seems like silly money invested in a sport that is only played seriously in one country in the world.

Just something else that makes you wonder where all of Arsenal's money has gone.

NFL teams are raking it in...

True, not sure it will ever be that popular over in America though with the way the MLS is. Hardly a showcase for the beautiful game. Plus there's more sports to choose from there.

The septics take the 4 main sports very seriously (Baseball, A Football, Basketball and Ice Hockey) State Leagues, National leagues...........u can become a star whilst still at school, they have major stories in national press about high school sports. Can get free Uni education if u excel at these (and other) sports. Football would have to get in at ground level if it was ever going to be that popular.

Yep they'd always be struggling behind those sports which are like a tradition for America now. I was reading something the other day about a college player getting picked in some kind of draw to play in the MLS, that might have been big news over there? He was like the highest rated college player. Probably need more world stars like Beckham to go over near the end of their career to boost it as well. Then maybe more people would take notice of soccer and follow other teams around the world.

FFS I can't believe I just called it soccer.

United and Chelsea have both had pre-season tours over there recently Paddy.

Arsenal and Chelsea have a link with American clubs. Everton also had a pre season tour in America.

Scary thing is, Forbes list shows United worth $1.8b, but has their debt at 60%. Thats nigh on $1.2b (£850m). Is that correct, yes i know Glazier borrowed money to buy United, but is it as much debt as that????????

Forbes list was based Revenues and operating income are for the 2006-07 season, converted into U.S. dollars based on June 30, 2007 exchange rates and includes any Stadium debt.
