Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has pleaded not guilty to any involvement in a bar brawl on Merseyside.

The 28-year-old star was arrested after a disturbance at the Lounge Bar nightclub in Southport on 29 December.

A 34-year-old man, from Southport, had hospital treatment after receiving facial injuries in the incident.

John Doran, 29, and Ian Smith, 19, both from Huyton, Merseyside, also appeared at North Sefton Magistrates' Court charged with assault and affray.

Gerrard was at the bar with friends to celebrate Liverpool's 5-1 win over Newcastle United, earlier on 29 December.

He was arrested alongside five others outside the venue and was later charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.

Gerrard was driven to the magistrates' court in Southport before jogging up the steps, dressed in a dark blue suit, for the short hearing.

It was the trio's first appearance in court following the incident.
According to my calculations the problem doesn't exist

could get in more trouble now though if found guilty, due to pleading not guilty earlier

could get in more trouble now though if found guilty, due to pleading not guilty earlier
but if he truly isn't guilty then he would be a fool to plead guilty just for a reduced punishment as it would mean a criminal record.

considering how famous he is there must have been loads of witnesses, so maybe he wasnt involved if thats what he's pleading

Court case is sandwiched between Old Trafford away and Aston Villa at home, bad timing for the club.

Is it going to be a judge and jury or just a judge's ruling, be hard to get an impartial jury i'm thinking because of his high profile status

i bet the people selecting the jury will try to avoid this by recruiting outside of manchester but i hope they realise 99.9 percent of their fans are not in manchester

LIVERPOOL FC captain Steven Gerrard appeared in court today charged with assaulting a dad-of-two at a Southport bar.

The 28-year-old did not enter a plea during the short hearing at North Sefton Magistrates Court, in Southport.

Dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and dark tie the Reds’ skipper was the first to take his place on the wooden benches in the secure dock in court number 2.

As he sat waiting for his co-accused to join him he glanced upwards to the media sitting high up in the court gallery.

Gerrard is accused of assaulting local businessman Marcus McGee, 34, at The Lounge Inn in the early hours of December 29.

He was left with bruises and a missing tooth after allegedly being punched in the face.

The footballer and dad-of-two, who also faces an affray charge, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, address before the charges were read out to him.

When asked if he understood the charges Gerrard said yes.

He appeared alongside John Doran, 29, of Woodlands Road, and Ian Gerard Smith, 19, of Hilary Avenue, both Huyton.

They also face assault and affray charges.
