One man can't keep a team in the premiership. Middlesbrough have a few good players who played their part.

And if you read my post you will know I am not saying he was the ONLY reason he was just the MAIN reason. I know one man can't keep a team in the prem.

it is a well known fact on here that i do not take much notice to what i read

Downing is average to good. Decent crosser of the ball. I just think Villa could of spent £12 million more wisely. You can get alot of talent for £12 million. Maybe O'Neils obsession with English players made him want Downing.

I am a big admirer of Villa, just alittle disapointed in this signing. I hope he does well and proves me wrong. I like to see Villa upsetting the top 4, well upsetting Arsenal. Not quite at the other 3's level

Downing in a team that creates hardly anything was finishing Boro's top scorer for 2/3 seasons. He may have been able to spend it more wisely but that would be on a different position or he would need to add even more money to get someone else. imo. I just think with the prices atm £12m for Downing seems about right.

They are not at our Level either imo. The Big 4 are stronger than most people think imo. We had a bad season last season and we still managed to comfortably finish in the top 4.

I agree with El I think for his £12mil he could have done a bit better had he looked abroad. And I think most would agree with that too.

Fair point :)

We will just have to disagree on the valuation for him. I would guess that if he was foreign then he would cost about £6-8

If he did look abroad though he would be taking a risk and he could have ended up wasting the money. With bringing in Downing he is bringing in someone he knows is Prem Quality. He might be playing it safe but with how much players are costing now I guess the bit extra you don't think he is worth is that security they are getting a player who is proven in the league.

These are the risks you have to take as a manager, can't play it safe allof the time...

Yeah he doesn't always play it safe. Ashley Young was a risk for £9m at the time he bought him. Can a team like Villa or most teams afford to waste money on a transfer who doesn't adapt to the league when paying that bit extra buys the proven quality?

sometimes u have to look at the players that r already suited to the prem, aston villa at the moment rnt really in a position to gamble on some foreigners that could take half a season to a season to adapt because of the way city and spurs r going about their business. i think those 2 will end up being above aston villa at the end of the season

loosing barry and laurson will be a big blow as they were both leaders and played in the 2 most important positions on the pitch. if u have a poor defence and a poor midfield generally the whole team is going to be poor unless your going to score 5 goals a game

Can they afford to spend 12mil on a player they don't need?

u say they dont need him, but they have milner and young as wingers and that is it, they do need some back up. i think they need a CB more though currently, but to find one of them that will improve the back line is going to be difficult

if young gets injured for a substantial amount of time, i cant see villa getting top 10, downing would provide good cover/can do a job himself anyway

How do they need him? Both Young and Milner are better players than him so he should be on the bench. If they can't afford to take the "risk" on a foreigner, for cheaper and probably better, then spending £12mil on someone to sit on the bench is foolish.

So they can't afford to take a risk on a foreign player, who would be most likely cheaper and better, but they can afford to spend £12mil on a back up player? Yeah cos that makes so much sense.
