With the money that they have been spending many must surely feel that Manchester City have to break the top four next season – the question is do you want them to succeed or fail?

I'm kind of stuck in the middle so will give reasons for both, not sure on which way to vote!

Succeed - If Manchester City break into the top four they will have been the first team to do so since Everton back in 2004–05 season. But even that season was questionable, the table does not lie but equally the table has not lied since – Everton have never been close to achieving that feat since, while Liverpool have gone from strength to strength. Then we have Tottenham Hotspur who twice came close under Martin Jol, however the fact remains is they didn't achieve it. A lack of squad depth and the brilliant end of season form from Arsenal saw them finish in fourth spot last season ahead of Aston Villa; who ended up finishing 6th having maintained 4th spot for a long time. It has to be said that the same top four each season is becoming tiresome and the only way clubs like Manchester City are realistically going to challenge is to base themselves on what Chelsea did a few years ago. It's very unlikely that modest clubs are going to break into the top four and remain there – as Everton found out.

The more competition will be welcome. The challenge will make the Premiership arguably more exciting as the League is currently over rated by some rather ridiculous media hype from Sky. The League is still quite challenging though, Manchester United were pushed in the three seasons that they had just won it in. But the problem is that the top four have been in a league of their own and it has to be said it's been pretty comfortable for them, there was quite a large gap yet again last season between 4th and 5th.

Fail - The way in which Manchester City are going about their business means that many may want to see them fail next season and for future seasons. A lot of players have gone their for the money but also for the future challenge, I think it's unfair to question some players because City could well be a major force in a few years, they aren't right now but things can change quickly as everyone saw with Chelsea. Gareth Barry could have handled his situation far more differently but his assertion that he wanted to play "European football" should he leave Aston Villa was not entirely true.

The added competition could see another side fall out and into decline, because they may not be able to compete on the pitch, while off it is unlikely they would be able to compete financially with Manchester City's muscle. Whichever way you look at it money talks and for the top teams to stay at the top they need that level of income coming in every year, a few clubs have debts on their hands as well, and the offer of Champions League football year after year is what has also been able to help the top four attract the bigger and better players every summer. Champions League football is crucial to certain clubs, a few seasons without it could be catastrophic for those with debt.

not my words but gives us a basis, so what do you want them to do, succeed or fail?

The top 4 needs breaking and I'm glad its looking likely to be my team that breaks them. Villa where unlucky not to do so aswell last year

if they gel they will push arsenal very very close to 4th spot and may even nick it

if not they will still finish top 6

Succeed in breaking the top 4, it's becoming stale and boring knowing who the top 4 teams are going to be every year. The gap between 4th and 5th was big last season and Arsenal weren't even good in the first half of the season. I'd prefer it if a club like Everton or Villa were the ones to do it with not spending as much money.

I don't want City winning the league. :fire:

I want somebody to break the top 4 but most definitely not City and their millions. I'd much rather Everton did it than Villa too, because of their lack of spending.

City's overspending is absolutely ridiculous and it will be interesting to see if they end up getting a new manager every few months if Hughes fails this season and nobody else can succeed.

Maybe it'd become as much a poisoned chalice as the Newcastle job :S Actually, no, that's not possible is it?

Don't think there's much chance of Everton or Villa breaking into the top 4 for more than a one off season. You saw last year how Arsenal didn't perform wel lfor the first half but still ended up comfortable in the top 4 come the end.

It was when they went out and signed arshavin! Everton and villa didnt have that luxuary and thats why they couldnt break the top 4

Sure they probably won't break the top 4, especially now Villa have lost Barry. But I don't think City breaking the top 4 would offer much satisfaction to people because of the amount of money they've spent. I'd like to see the top 4 broken but by fairer means I guess. It wouldn't be an incredible surprise bearing in mind the money they've spent, would it? After this season it won't be a top 4 it'll be a top 5. Wow, big changes. Not.

Obviously I'd like us to succedd... But I doubt it will happen this season.... I think top 6 is much more realistic, and then the season after we can really do some damage

I don't think it's possible for a club to break and then maintain a position in the top 4 without spending big money to ketchup. Not a surprise but it'd be somebody different at least and some club to actually challenge the top 4 instead of it being predictable.

Exactly, it'd be nice to see a proper club like Spurs, Everton or Villa push the top four close.

The main reason is that Arsenal were too good already and Villa crumbled.

I hope they succeed. The top 4 sides upto last summer had the pick of who they wanted, now another team has entered the mix it will create more competition at that end of the table. Everybody knew it would take such a senario that occured at City to break the top 4, fair play to Moyes and MON for getting the maximum from their respective teams but talk of either breaking the top 4 was fantasy, money and lots of it is the reality of how to challenge.
