Chelsea and Manchester City are among four teams who have made approaches for Atletico Madrid striker Diego Forlan this summer.

The Spaniards are determined to hold on to the former Manchester United player, quoting his £31million release clause as the only level at which a deal would be done.

Barcelona are increasingly interested in taking the plunge as Valencia dig in their heels on a £43m valuation of Spain striker David Villa.

Wanted man: Four teams have chased Atletico Madrid's Diego Forlan this summer

Real Madrid are the other club to have made an enquiry, but they are thought to be no longer interested since adding Karim Benezema to the signings of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo, as well as re-signing Alvaro Negredo from Almeria.

City's interest is only likely to be renewed if their bid for Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor hits the skids.

But it is unclear whether City would still be in the race. The 30-year-old Uruguay international hardly seems like the creative force that Carlo Ancelotti says he needs to add to the squad, but the Italian coach is thought to be keen on further adding to his attacking options.

He is only 30 and he doesnt really rely on his pace so you would get 3 years out of him but the price is a bit high tbh

Because clubs have seen the craziest season ever for Transfers. If the name City or Real get mentioned, starting figures double. Forlan had just turned 30, not 31, but even so its a tad high, but lot massively so.

Yeah I didn't know he was that old til a few days ago. This rumour will be rubbish anyway with them going after Adebayor.

Forlan would be a great signing if you didn't end up getting Adebayor.

i take it that Mark Hughes has been told to be more attacking, but fielding a team full of strikers is not what they meant...

Well he's a better player than Adebayor flak and he wouldn't be a long term signing so there'll still be hope for players like Ched Evans for example.

Ched Evans isn't going to make it there now. City can't afford to give him chances.

Forlan gets goals in Spain but it remains to be seen whether he can play like that consistently in England and Adebayor is proven in the league.
