Chelsea and city enquire about alonso

Chelsea and Manchester City have contacted the agent of Xabi Alonso enquiring after the player`s situation at Liverpool...

In the last 48 hours, Xabi has spoken publicly for the first time since returning for pre-season. The Liverpool midfielder told Spanish newspaper AS that: “It`s always a great feeling when Madrid want you, especially considering the phase of the career I am in now...Madrid`s project is certainly impressive. But beyond that, I can`t tell you anything else.”

Xabi`s words have, understandably, been well received in Madrid, but the Spanish club continue to insist that they will not increase their last offer of €27 million for the Liverpool midfielder. Nevertheless, I suspect that, unless Madrid make another signing for the central midfield role, they may very well return with a higher offer following a few summer friendlies and it becomes increasingly apparent to Pellegrini that his side needs a player who possesses Alonso`s qualities providing control and stability in midfield.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain unwilling to reduce their asking price and Rafa Benitez` public statements support that stance. However, as the player caught in the middle becomes increasingly frustrated and is pushed towards making a more public expression of his desire to leave, the likelihood that other clubs will start taking an interest grows.

As a consequence, Liverpool`s premiership rivals Chelsea and Manchester City have both made enquiries with Xabi`s agent, although at this moment in time, neither side appear willing to pay more than €30 million for the midfielder.

Can't see city going for him either... we are overflowing in midfielders.... Like I said... It was his agent who came out with it which imo means he wants real to get a move on...

Probably better then most yeah, and I'd love to see him at city.... but that is not really the point, we already have brought in a new midfielder, and we have plenty of players on the books, we need a CB... and the biggest clue why this nothing more then an agent trying to get Real to move is tha fact that the SAME agent is the one that came out with these rumours

I don't care how good alonso is ( he is very, very good) but looking at the article and the sources, and the reality of the squads that all of a sudden supposedly want him, makes me say that this is nothing more then a big steaming load off Bullsh*t

I am, your article states it's the agent coming out with this story, and that is probably the biggest hint of all. Alonso wants to go to madrid anyway, not city or chelsea. Madrid are stalling and balking at the price. Indicating that there are other clubs in for him who can match Real money wise is THE way to try and get real moving... and I wouldn't want to get rid of De Jong anyway
