it's not 'playing' it though, it's altering the air flow through the vocal chords via your mouth, lungs and tongue.

Technically, singing is glorified speaking

Harmonica is an instrument. It is an external object which you blow into to make a noise, therefore playing it.

I could even take it a step further, for many blowing instruments you need your vocal chords as well, so the instrument is nothing more then something that changes the sounds of your vocal chords

exactly, the instrument changes your vocal chords into different sounds...therefore you play it

yes but certainly not to the extent as you do when you are singing... I've sung in a choir and I can tell you that even after warming up your voice, three or four songs at full intensity will leave you with a quite tired vocal chord I can tell you. Singing is much more creative, and uses more techniques to make sound then you do whilst talking....

and when you sing you bend your voice to make quite different sounds then you do when you are talking... I would argue that the voice was the first instrument even, making music first, when there were no instruments as yet

not debating its an instrument, I'm debating that you 'play' it.

To me, something you 'play' is external

the medium you use it on blowing instruments is your vocal chord often though.... well maybe you are right, I don't care enough to debate it any further
