Adrian Mutu has won an appeal to have the £15million he owes Chelsea suspended, his agent Giovanni Becali revealed.

The suspension is only temporary and lapses at end of November but Becali is hopeful that the situation will have moved on by then.

The Romanian international signed for Chelsea in 2003 for £15million but was sacked a year later when he failed a drugs test and handed a seven-month global ban as a result.

The striker joined Juventus after his suspension before moving to Fiorentina in 2006 where he still resides.

In May last year Mutu was ordered by Fifa to pay Chelsea £15.78million in damages. The former Parma ace appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport but his efforts were dismissed in July.

Mutu took his case to the Swiss Federal Court and, according to Becali, the fine has now been temporarily suspended.

"The suspension of the fine is a positive decision for Mutu, but we must not celebrate because this is just the first step," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"This is a provisional suspension until the end of November. It is the first step. We hope that Mutu will not pay because he has already paid so much by not playing for several months and losing money."

I knew he wouldn't have to pay it.

Success is winning championships. It is nothing less than that. And when you win a championship – and we will – success isn't measured or accomplished by winning once
