To say Villa wouldn't have come back into it without the first goal is just pure guessing, tbh. Would have been up to Blackburn to keep going after that. You never know how a game is gonna pan out so you can't really decide what would have happened without that first goal. If anything ruined your game, it was big ole beastly samba getting sent off. |

I agree to a certain extent. You can't blame the referee for it all and I think he has to share responsibility with a few people. Also, if we'd won the first leg with Allardyce having played the right team we'd have been in a much better position - and it was Allardyce's fault for playing a team that had no chance of winning the first match and only making the changes when that game was lost. Kalinic should have scored two in the last match instead of hitting the post both times. In today's match, we were 2-0 up and controlling things. Its an absolutely crystal clear decision - probably one of the easiest decisions in the match to make and he gets it very wrong. This lifted the crowd a lot and it lifted the Villa players a lot. It totally changed the complexion of the match and I am quite sure we'd have gone on to get at least a third goal fairly quickly without that first Villa goal and then its pretty much game over. Samba wouldn't have felt the need to put that tackle in and thus wouldn't have been sent off. At 2-1, he panics and makes the tackle (its 2-2 on aggregate at that stage remember), gets sent off and then he removes any remaining chance we had. I think that some things are just pot luck in terms of the team working out in the first leg and Kalinic missing opportunities, but they still are places where blame should be apportioned. Similarly, the referee makes a decision that turns the game in such a major way that Villa really get back into it, and then Samba loses his head and does some more himself. The referee is paid a lot of money to make big and small decisions and in reality it should have been a trivial small decision - I shall be expecting no free kicks to be given against Rovers for that now for a while as we always get those given against Roberts. Samba is paid big money as he's supposedly a great defender and he messes up too. The referee's job should be easiest though as he has a linesman to help him who is also paid good money to make such decisions. Edited by footyfan000, Jan 20 2010, 11:18 PM.

I don't think an unjust decision would make a difference in a 6-0 defeat.... |

I think you can blame the officials for it tbh. That was the turning point in the match up to then and nobody knows what would have happened, you can't say the Samba incident wouldn't have happened just as you can't say Blackburn would have gone on to score a third. |

they were still in control of the match at 2-1 though, the red card changed the match more then the foul not being given. it was hardly as blatent as you lot are making out anyway. i have seen far worse decisions then that, although its hardly a consolation to the blackburn fans. |

Me neither. However, in a 6-4 defeat, it makes a huge difference. I think it was a huge turning point in the game when Villa unjustly got that first goal, and also if Samba gets sent off when we're up 2-0, we are in a position where we can still defend a little bit and keep possession without having to go for a goal and leave ourselves so vulnerable to the counter. It was quite blatant and the linesman should definitely have seen it - it was a two handed shove in the back. As I said in an earlier post, you can't apportion all blame to the officials because if we'd have played the team we started out with in the second half last week we'd arguably have come out with a better result, leaving us in a much better position for this match. We also can blame Samba for getting sent off, and various other little things like Pedersen not performing. The crowd got a huge lift from the goal which lifted the players and it was the fact that the goal lifted the crowd which made the biggest difference. |

Nah the first goal knocked Blackburn a bit and put them o nthe back foot. They were pretty much in control before that. That goal got Villa's heads up... |
