Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has been found positive for the banned substance Sibutramine following a doping test he took on January 10. Coni (the Italian Olympic Committee) have confirmed he failed a doping test following the 2-1 win over Bari earlier this month. A statement on their official website reads "Coni communicates that, following laboratory tests in Roma, a positive case has been found. In the first player who was tested, the presence of traces of the substance Sibutramine was found for Adrian Mutu during a routine control of the anti-doping committee on January 10 in Florence, during the Serie A game between Fiorentina and Bari." Mutu scored in that game and the Viola went on to win 2-1. The consequences for the player could be severe. Sky Sport Italia claim the player could be given a ban ranging anything from 12 months to four years, as this is the second time he has failed a test. Many will remember that Mutu famously failed a test for cocaine in 2004 during his days at Chelsea. He was subsequently sacked from the club and banned for seven months. The substance Sibutramine is banned in the United Kingdom and European Union, and it has been documented the substance has been used as a way of surpressing hunger, or treating obesity. |
