the irony is, is that if that was Henry for Arsenal taking it that quickly Wenger wd have no complaints. But putting that to one side for a sec, I think that should be like a free kick where the ref blows the whistle before it's taken :S
aye, i think generally around there it should be a case of waiting for the whistle but I can't think off hand that its a rule and as such its a perfectly legit goal aint it?
Yeh I guess, I can only think of a Giggs free kick when he took it but I'm pretty sure that Giggs asked the ref and he gave the nod while the oppo didn't realise. But here the ref didn't signal or give an ok and the Porto player didn't ask did he? I'm not sure if they at least need to ask like? Just noticed Stacie's post above which kinda links in with what I thought?
I'm not sure. I thought as long as the ref has signalled for it to be given it didn't matter if the opposition is 'ready'. Now the ref did raise his hand, but it was a second too late because he wasn't watching what was going on so I think he had to give it cos he probably still doesn't know what happened

yeh I don't think they have to be ready, but I thought a Porto player wd ask is it ok to take it, or some sort of nod from the ref. I didn't notice if he signalled with his arm, but if he did then fair enough. I know anywhere else on the pitch and players often take quick free kicks, but with a back pass in the pen areas thought if might be different. I guess not, I suppose there's no reason to be.

Yeah I just found it weird that the ref only signalled once he realised it had already been taken. It's supposed to be an advantage, so it's up to the opposition to get ready.

Porto need a 3rd to give themselves a glimmer of a chance of going through

isn't this whistle malarky generally for direct free kicks though, in this case it was indirect was it not?

My mom (about Arsenal): Are they winning?
Me: No :(
Mom (sarcastically): Oh, that's unusual lol

She actually laughed out loud.

Yeh good point. I don't know the exact rules tbh it just seemed like it was too quick. It's one of those that if your team scores you're well happy, but if it happens against you you're like wtf!

its obviously not clear which is the key thing, I think the whistle situation is more of a professional courtesy from the ref to the defending team but not essential. I seem to remember many moons ago that loads of quick free kicks were resulting in goals and teams were in uproar about it, not long after this whistling lark started to become more frequent but I cant recall it ever being an actual rule, might be wrong :)
