Just seen a youtube of Dunphy, Brady and Souness - no holds barred, very opinionated, I like it ![]() Who would you rather have right now - Eduardo or Saha? |

bit o clarification Ted, looking at the rules it basically seems to say that the ref only needs to use the whistle to restart play from a free kick when the correct distance is required. So basically it suggests that if the team taking the kick want to have a pop and a wall is being setup the the whistle is needed to start play in that instance only. Otherwise it does state that the whistle is not generally needed to restart play for a free kick |

cheers mate, but I'm wondering whether the ref has to at least ask "do you want to take it quickly?" or even make some sort of signal with his hand. Or does the player taking the free kick have to ask "can I take it quickly?". But to be honest now that I've seen it a few times, the Porto players knew what they wanted to do and the Arsenal players just went to sleep. Even Fabianski turned his back after giving the ball back and Vermaelen just watched the runner before realising. |

under the section of the rules on signals in the game it doesn't say anything about them having to ask, about permission given or anything to that effect at all. As I say, I think its just a professional courtesy from the ref to do so but he is not actually obliged to, I would say the refs decision tonight was arrogant and potentially unprofessional but not actually wrong if that makes sense. |
