Hmmm Scholes had a good game, he gave the ball away a few times in the first half but considering it's first game of the season he quickly made up for it. Berba was alright, I thought he played ok, he was involved in everything going forward and his passing was decent, but as UwesG pointed out those flicks are a waste of time and I would really like to see him dribbling towards the opposition goal instead of ours for most of the game. Third game in a row where Nani's passing has been absolutely S-H-I-T. He looks like he's regressed from last season, he's going back to sloppy passes and lofting balls into the middle of nowehere. I've backed the bloke in the past but this is make or break season for him now, he needs to up it. Poor game from Valencia, everytime he had a run he kept checking back instead of playing the ball in across goal first time. I agree with Rodders, I thought Enrique was very good. I thought he had Valencia covered all game tbf. I have to admit I do wonder what happened to the time when we used to blitz teams for the first 20 mins of a match Newcastle were giving us so much time and space on the ball at the beginning of that first half and our midfield couldn't pass the ball about. No coincidence that this was the time Scholes hadn't got into gear, and this once again highlighted our lack of creativity without him. Other teams won't stand off us as much as today and we will get found out. And how many headers did they have in our box ffs. Anyone else and we'd have been playing catch up all game. And Dutch - to boss means to control, simple as. Forget today, get a dvd of the community shield game and you'll see Scholes bossing Essien like his personal bitch

Berba and Scholes were the two best players on the pitch today. Scholes passing was phenomenal and is still world class even at his age. Berba started off quiet but as the match went on he was superb. Great result and its great to get off to a winning start |

Not a bad performance considering it's the first of the season, i think if that game had have come a month later the score would have been 5 or 6 nil. Evra and Valencia looked fairly rusty, Rooney is obviously nowhere near fit. As usual the Berba haters completely ignore the good work he did in retaining possession and finding people in space, chuffed he got on the scoresheet but disappointed he got just the one. Scholes was a class above with his passing. Not much to be seen from Chico really but i love how he hangs on the shoulder of the last man, once the rest of the team get used to how he plays and start looking for the through ball to him i think he'll bang in a few this season. |

Not to start anything, but as much as 'the Berba haters' fail to see the good, 'the Berba gobblers' fail to see the bad. Overall 3 points, 3 goals, and closer to match fitness. Scholes is a genius.. Dutch, he bossed it. |

Maybe true but i'm more than willing to highlight his flaws, the flicks can be annoying yes, sometimes he tries to be too clever and fails to take the simple option. I don't accept the criticism of him that he's lazy, yes sometimes he looks like he's barely breaking a sweat but that's just his demeanor and has been as long as i can remember. I've said in other threads we've overpaid for him and I've also said this is a make or break season for him. On the other side you have lads like manu22 (who i happen to think is sound besides his Berba hate) who posts stuff like during the first half when Berba was involved with everything. |
