Another new season of Serie A kicks off on Sunday. Despite suffering from an economic downturn in recent years Serie A still provides some of the best players and coaches in the game today, as well as they current European champions Inter Milan. If you are looking for 6-0 wins two or three times a week then look away, Serie A is incredibly competitive. Here is a quick preview of the major teams and transfers in and out so far. Inter Milan Inter under Jose were 40 mins away from blowing an 13 point lead & the title to Roma last May but a Diego Milito goal at Siena proved the title winning goal. Milito was the key player in Inter's treble sucess, the Argentine striker also scored the crucial goals in the Coppa & Champions League Finals. This season Inter will be under new management in Rafa Benitez, a tactictian who should suit Serie A. Blessed with an array of talent inherited such Julio Cesar, Lucio, Cambiasso, Snjeider and Milito, Inter will start the season as clear favourites. Rafa's flaw in England, identifying player talent, is removed from his role now. With no major talent brought to the club in the Summer the fear would be the squad goes stale, Balotelli left for England, but under Benitez's guidance maybe that is not such a bad thing for the player. Key Player: Diego Milito - provides the goals that Eto'o and Pandev can't One To Watch: Davide Santon - not trusted by Mourinho surely the talented full back can claim the left back position AS Roma Under Raneri Roma nearly pulled of the biggest surprise in many years by taking the title race down to the wire. Since then Roma have had more struggle off the pitch but have managed to sign Brazilian pair Adriano and Fabio Simplico on free's as well as Nicolas Burdisso's brother, Guillermo from Rosario Central. On paper the capital club have a stong 11, and with Adriano on board to help Totti, Vucinic & Menez in attack, Roma can still be genuine title contenders. Key Player: Francesco Totti - Quite simply the King of Rome makes Roma click One To Watch: Jeremy Menez - Stuggled initially in Italy, similar to Gourcouff but in the last 3 months cemented his spot in the team. AC Milan Milan flopped badly last season after giving the inexperienced Leonardo the position as head coach. This season the appointment of Max Allegri and the solving of the notorious goalkeeping position, Milan fans can expect a genuine challenge. This summer has seen Marco Amelia, Papastathopoulos & Boateng all arrive from Genoa with Bochetti also mooted. Pato is now fully free of injury and if rumours of Zlantan prove correct, Milan could have a potent strikeforce. Key Player: Andrea Pirlo - Key midfield player for Milan who knits it all together. One To Watch: Mathieu Flamini - Told he is on his last chance , it's a make or break season for the Frenchman. Juventus Suffered their worst season in top flight football for over 50 years last year and have responded well. Del Neri arrives fresh from a 4th place finish with the under resourced Samp. A major overhaul of the playing staff has seen Bonucci, Motta, Krasic, Pepe, Lanzafameze & Aquilinai all arrive, out goes the older blood of Poulsen, Tiago, Cameronesi, Grosso & Cannavaro. Will be questions over how long it will take the team to settle and with Buffon missing until January, Juve will need to hit the ground running. Key Player: Giorgio Chiellini - The successor to Cannavaro's throne at Club and International level will need to play well & organise his new defence One To Watch: Alberto Aquiliani - Can he redicover his form of old. Sampdoria Like Spurs in England, Samp were the surprise 4th place finishers in Italy last season, however, since the coach Del Neri has joined Juventus and Domenico Di Carlo who performed miracles at Chievo. A quite summer, Samp have said they would wait until after Champions League qualifiers to view the transfer market. Key Player: Antonio Cassano - His partnership with Pazzini provided over 3/4's of Samp's goals last season. One To Watch:Andrea Poli - Intellengent midfield player who can step up to the senior squad if he continues to progress Palermo Were pipped to 4th by Sampdoria on the final day of the season. Since then Uruguay star Edison Caviani has joined rivals Napoli. Abel Hernandez & Javier Pastore can help the club into another challenge for 4th Napoli An excellent 6th last season and further strenghtened by Caviani's arrival & Hamsik's commitment for one more season can see them challenge for Europe once more Fiorentina Despite doing well in Europe, Fiorentina's form slumped from March and a dissapointing 10th was all to show for despite early season promise. Prandelli took the Italy job so Sinsa Mihajlovic who done a fine job with Catania takes over. D'Agostino arrived from Udinese tp provide the creativity from midfield, but Jovetic's injury will hamper their progress this season. Genoa Genoa have by far all over Europe being the surprise team in the transfer market for all the right reasons. Rafina €8m, Eduardo €3m, Luca Toni free, Miguel Veloso €6m, Boateng €5m & Ranocchia on loan, have turned heads. It's only right they challenge for a Europa place, and maybe more |

Good write up mate. I think Milan will do well this year. Hopefully Ronaldinho can push on again from last year and if they can get Zlatan they'll have a huge chance of winning the league. I like the look of that Sokratis chap, think he'll be a good signing. I don;t think Inter will win the league under Rafa this year. |

Yeah nice post Ricky. ![]() Inter is ready made for Rafa, ideal formation and everything from last season. I think the thing that will be key is if he can get the best from Eto'o, we all know he's not as good a man manager as Maureen. I can see Eto'o not wanting to take one for the team and kicking up a stink tbh. Not really a fan of AC Milan's signings, Juventus look to have done he better business in the transfer market. Milan really need Ibrahimovich if they are gonna challenge for the title. |
