Southampton have sacked manager Alan Pardew - just two days after the club's 4-0 win at Bristol Rovers, with assistant boss Dean Wilkins stepping into the breach as caretaker for the time being. The League One side issued a statement on Monday claiming an overhaul was needed and that "it is essential to make changes to the first team management and coaching''. Pardew, 49, led Saints to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in March with a 4-1 win over Carlisle at Wembley and they started the season as firm favourites to achieve promotion to the Championship, although one win in their first three matches leaves them 14th in the table. "Following a review of the current status in and around the first team, the club has decided that, to achieve its well known targets, it is essential to make changes to the first team management and coaching," the club's statement read. "These targets for sustained and significant progress embrace both the first team and the football development and support centre as integrated, co-operative units. "Consequently, the first team manager Alan Pardew, first team coach Wally Downes and goalkeeping coach Stuart Murdoch have been relieved of their duties with immediate effect. We wish them well for the future. "While we have commenced our careful evaluation of our candidates and longer term requirements, Dean Wilkins has taken on the caretaker role for the first team and he will be assisted by Martin Hunter, the Under-21 coach. "We recognise that frequent changes to the football management are unlikely to assist in the winning of trophies and promotions. "However, we are taking these steps to achieve our aims, which we share with all supporters, to get promoted this season, and secure long term stability and progress for our football operations.'' Pardew becomes the fourth manager in the Football League to leave his post since the start of the season, following the departures of Steve Coppell (Bristol City), Kevin Blackwell (Sheffield United) and Chris Turner (Hartlepool). |

Tadpole's Excrement

I don't see why they would wait until 4 games in to sack somebody, either do it at the end of the season or if you're doing bad after a large proportion of the season. 4 games is ridiculous. |

There's quite a few managers already gone although some have walked which is just as bad. Poor timing though after they won 4-0.

Scunthorpe chairman Steve Wharton believes Southampton have withdrawn their offer to Nigel Adkins to fill the vacant managerial position at St Mary's. Adkins, 45, who has steered the Iron to two promotions in four years on a shoestring budget, had emerged as the man the Saints want to replace Alan Pardew, who was sacked on August 30. Assistant manager Andy Crosby was expected to follow Adkins to St Mary's but the two clubs have failed to agree a compensation package. Wharton revealed: "The latest I've heard is that Southampton have withdrawn their offer to Nigel. They gave him an ultimatum to resign from his position as Scunthorpe United manager, but he was not prepared to do that until a compensation package had been agreed. "I'm on my way to Glanford Park this morning and hopefully everything will then become clearer.'' Adkins has spent the past 14 years at Scunthorpe, working for a decade as the club's physiotherapist and spending the last four as manager. His ambition looked set to be matched when the Southampton vacancy arose but it now seems increasingly unlikely that he will take up the position. His refusal to walk out of Glanford Park without compensation having been agreed underlined his loyalty to the club and raised the prospect of him remaining at the helm for Saturday's home clash with Bristol City. Phil Brown, who has been out of work since leaving Hull, would now appear to be favourite to land the job at Southampton. |
