Inter Milan moved to the top of the Serie A table thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Udinese at the San Siro. Lucio put Inter ahead after six minutes, but Antonio Floro Flores deservedly levelled after 31.
Samuel Eto'o scored the winner in the 67th minute after his penalty was saved to earn Inter coach Rafael Benitez his first win in Serie A.
Inter were in need of an early goal to settle the nerves following their disappointing goalless draw with Bologna on the opening day of the season, and they got it.
Wesley Sneijder's corner was tipped beyond the far post by Samir Handanovic, but Lucio was waiting and provided a composed finish, picking his spot beyond the Udinese goalkeeper back into the opposite corner.
Udinese responded well and the lively Alexis Sanchez almost provided a chance for Antonio Di Natale to level in the 10th minute, but his low cross was just behind his strike partner.
Sanchez then provided the cross from which Floro Flores equalised after half an hour.
He stole in between Walter Samuel and Lucio to head the ball unstoppably past Julio Cesar from close range.
Diego Milito almost restored Inter's advantage immediately, but Handanovic got his fingertips to his shot to push the ball just wide for a corner, from which Samuel headed just inches wide of the other upright.
McDonald Mariga should have put the Nerazzurri ahead in the 57th minute, but he shot straight at Handanovic from eight yards. But Udinese substitute Gabriel Angella then gifted Inter the chance to go ahead again when he handled Sneijder's cross inside the area.
The penalty was inevitable and Eto'o stepped up only to see his shot saved by Handanovic. However, the ball rebounded out to the Cameroon hitman, who made sure with the follow-up.
Eto'o hit the post in the 83rd minute, but he was the only one still trying for the home side, who had long since opted to defend their slender advantage.
They did so without any major scares to win their first game of the Serie A season and move provisionally to the top of the table.
Cagliari 5-1 Roma
Daniele Conti was instrumental for Cagliari as they crushed Roma at the Stadio Sant'Elia, although the goalscoring midfielder was in hospital when the final whistle sounded. Conti put the Sardinians in front in the eighth minute before Daniele De Rossi brought Roma level 10 minutes later.
Conti was then hacked down inside the penalty area by Nicolas Burdisso, who saw red before Alessandro Matri put Cagliari in front, but Conti was already on his way to hospital by the time Robert Acquafresca made it three in the 38th minute.
Matri's second of the game in the 47th minute made it four before Andrea Lazzarri completed the rout with three minutes remaining.
Conti has made a habit of upsetting his father Bruno, who is the general manager of Roma.
The Cagliari midfielder has scored against Roma three times already, including the goal which earned the Sardinians a win over the Giallorossi last season.
It was no surprise, therefore, that he scored again, although the joy at opening the scoring soon turned to pain as he was carried away from the field with a serious knee injury following a dangerous tackle from Burdisso.
Nevertheless, Conti was the man who made the difference in more ways than one.
His unstoppable volley from 20 yards put the hosts in front in the eighth minute, but De Rossi cancelled it out with a header which deflected off the shoulder of Davide Biondini on its way in.
However, the incident which changed the match came just 60 seconds later and Conti was in the thick of the action.
Acquafresca's shot was saved miraculously by Julio Sergio, but the ball broke loose to Conti, who was hacked down by Burdisso.
After a break of several minutes, Conti was carried from the field and Burdisso left too, having been shown the red card.
Bruno Conti raced from the bench to see how his son was and Matri's goal from the penalty spot almost passed unnoticed as Cagliari were reluctant to celebrate after seeing Conti leave the field in such distress.
Francesco Totti left the field seconds later as Burdisso's younger brother Guillermo came on to make his debut for 10-man Roma who, by this point, knew they had a mountain to climb to get anything from this match.
Acquafresca made it three for Cagliari in the 38th minute, heading in from near to the penalty spot at the end of another prolonged attack by the home team.
And the victory was sealed two minutes into the second half by Matri, who scored his second of the game with a close-range header from Andrea Cossu's cross.
Lazzarri rubbed salt in Roma's wounds late on with a fifth to end a night to forget for Roma coach Claudio Ranieri.
Cesena 2-0 AC Milan
Cesena's bright start to the Serie A season continued as the newly-promoted side stunned the superstars of AC Milan at the Stadio Dino Manuzzi. Fabrizio Castori's side kicked off life in the top flight with a creditable point at last year's runners-up Roma, and followed that result up with a deserved triumph.
Erjon Bogdani and Emanuele Giaccherini grabbed the goals in the opening period for the hosts, who will enjoy the distinction of sitting second in the standings for a few hours at least.
The visitors kicked off their season with a 4-0 demolition of Lecce but this result will be an early wake-up call for coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose miserable night was capped when Zlatan Ibrahimovic missed a penalty four minutes from time.
Milan playmaker Ronaldinho came close to opening the scoring inside 10 minutes with a close-range effort but Francesco Antonioli was equal to it and turned the ball over the bar.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead on 24 minutes when Alexandre Pato fired home but the referee brought the play back for a free-kick with the assistant's flag raised for offside.
Cesena took the lead against the run of play on 31 minutes.
Matias Schelotto created the chance with a cross from the right which Bogdani met with a firm header beyond the sprawling Christian Abbiati.
The hosts were denied a second nine minutes later as Sokratis Papastathopoulos produced a superb last-ditch tackle to check the run of Bogdani, but Cesena's second goal was not much longer in coming.
With a minute remaining before the interval, Bogdani turned provider with a defence-splitting pass for Giaccherini who slid the ball beyond Abbiati into the right corner.
Pato was again frustrated on 52 minutes when he got the ball in the net again, this time the Brazilian was thwarted as the referee blew up for handball.
Ibrahimovic looked the man most likely to pull one back for Milan but was first denied by Antonioli before a narrow offside call stopped him in his track with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Antonioli denied Ibrahimovic again inside the last five minutes before Milan suffered a final insult.
Cesena defender Yuto Nagatomo fouled Filippo Inzaghi in the area, prompting the referee to point to the spot, but Ibrahimovic fluffed his lines as his spot-kick hit Antonioli's right-hand post.
Brescia 3-2 Palermo
Brescia won their first game of the Serie A season as they edged Palermo 3-2 this afternoon at the Mario Rigamonti stadium. The hosts released all of their frustration at losing their opening game on a Palermo side that struggled from the start.
Simone Dallamano put Brescia in front early on while Javier Pastore equalised midway through the first half for Palermo.
Brescia put their woes behind them with a smart finish from Citadin Eder in the 28th minute.
Andrea Caracciolo then converted from the penalty spot before half-time after being brought down inside the area by Palermo's Ezequiel Munoz.
Caracciolo fired a right-footed shot to the centre of goal where Palermo goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu could not reach to make it 3-1.
Federico Balzaretti reduced arrears with seven minutes remaining but Brescia held on for their first points of the campaign.
It did not take long for Brescia to take the lead with Dallamano on target after three minutes.
Dallamano got behind Davide Baiocco's pass before firing a left-footed strike from distance past Sirigu.
Palermo equalised in the 22nd minute with Pastore firing his shot past Brescia goalkeeper Matteo Sereni and into the roof of the goal from 14 yards.
A determined Brescia hit back in the 28th minute.
A fast counter-attack saw Alessandro Diamanti chip the ball towards Eder and the Brazilian striker surged inside the area and slipped a neat finish past Sirigu.
Palermo reduce the deficit in the 82nd minute.
Balzaretti intercepted Davide Baiocco's back pass and put it past a helpless Sereni.
Brescia held on without major scares.
Lazio 3-1 Bologna
Lazio fended off a late Bologna comeback to record their first victory of the season. Stefano Mauri and Tommaso Rocchi had given the Romans what seemed like an unassailable lead with strikes in the second half.
But when Gaby Mudingayi clawed one back for the visitors with 12 minutes remaining it set up a frantic finish.
The Rossoblu surged forward in search of an equaliser.
The best opportunity of all fell to substitute Daniele Paponi who, in the 88th minute, headed over the bar Luca Siligardi's dangerous cross towards the far post.
Lazio put the game beyond doubt when Hernanes struck from the penalty spot deep in stoppage-time after Daniele Portanova had brought down substitute Libor Kozak inside the area.
Lazio could have taken the lead in the 26th minute but Mauri's header from five yards was saved by Bologna goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.
At the other end, Marco Di Vaio struck wide from the heart of the area as both teams went into the break with all to play for.
Lazio showed more determination in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 68th minute.
Mauri got behind Rocchi's cross and struck a right-footed shot from the heart of the area past Viviano.
Lazio doubled their lead seven minutes later.
This time Mauri acted as provider and served Rocchi, whose lob over the keeper that sent the crowd at the Stadio Olimpico into raptures.
There was little Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera could do to save Mudingayi's bullet strike from 25 yards as Bologna reduced arrears.
Lazio's Hernanes ended Bologna's hopes when he struck towards the right corner from the six-yard box.
Genoa 1-3 Chievo
Chievo moved to the top of Serie A as the only club with a 100% record after two games - at least awaiting Bari's trip to Napoli on Sunday - thanks to a resounding 3-1 win over Genoa. Mattia Destro scored on his Serie A debut for Genoa after six minutes and it looked like it would be a comprehensive win for the home team as they wasted numerous chances in the first half an hour, but the Flying Donkeys responded well.
Davide Moscardelli brought them level on the stroke of half-time and further goals from Michele Marcolini and Sergio Pellissier in the second half earned them a deserved win which could even have been greater, had they taken their chances better.
Genoa began the game as they had left off against Udinese a fortnight ago with an early goal.
Destro, who made his Italy Under-21 debut last Tuesday, steered a cool finish past Stefano Sorrentino after being put through by Rodrigo Palacio in the sixth minute.
Genoa pushed forward for a second with Giuseppe Sculli almost meeting Palacio's low cross.
The same combination almost led to a second in the 20th minute when Sculli somehow managed to place his shot wide of Sorrentino's post while claiming he was pushed in the back by Gennaro Sardo.
Genoa paid for not making the most of their dominance as Chievo hit back, practically controlling the rest of the game.
They gave enough warnings before Moscardelli equalised with a major helping hand from Genoa defender Dario Dainelli.
The Chievo striker's shot was heading to the far corner of Eduardo's goal when it took a wicked deflection off Dainelli to enter into the opposite corner with practically the final kick of the first half.
Domenico Criscito tested Sorrentino early in the second half, but it was one-way traffic thereafter.
The visitors went ahead in the 56th minute with Luciano's cross headed in off the inside of the post by Marcolini.
Eduardo prevented them from making it three in the 70th minute when he made a spectacular save from Pablo Granoche, who hit the outside of the post minutes later.
Pellissier sealed the win while Genoa were still counting their blessings at not already being three behind.
He was set up by Granoche and made no mistake with his shot across Eduardo into the corner.
Chievo's top goalscorer from last season should have added a fourth in the 76th minute when he failed to beat Eduardo in a one-on-one situation. Nevertheless, Chievo's win was never in doubt.
Lecce 1-0 Fiorentina
Lecce completed a fortuitous victory as Fiorentina were left to rue wasteful finishing and a linesman's questionable flag. David Di Michele scored the only goal in the ninth minute, but the hosts were forced to withstand near-constant pressure thereafter.
Keeper Antonio Rosati was in inspired form, Alessio Cerci was the most culpable amongst a host of missed chances and Per Kroldrup had most to complain about when dubiously adjudged offside early in the second half.
Rosati was into the action inside two minutes to prevent Cerci's cross reaching Alberto Gilardino, and Gaetano D'Agostino then shot wide from distance.
Lecce scored from their first attack, though, as Di Michele turned and finished low from six yards.
Kroldrup met D'Agostino's free-kick with a tame header which Rosati saved and Gilardino then headed another cross from the same player wide.
Centre-half Stefano Ferrario provided a rare test for Viola keeper Sebastien Frey with a 30-yard effort, but Rosati was at his best as a stunning double save denied Gilardino from inside the six-yard box.
D'Agostino fired a cross-shot wide and Cerci was also off target before Gilardino was denied a clear chance by a very marginal offside flag.
The pattern did not change after the interval, with Gilardino firing wide from distance before Kroldrup had the ball in the net and, in common with most of the ground, was shocked to see the flag go up.
Young substitute Adem Ljajic failed to hit the target with a free header when well placed to meet Manuel Pasqual's cross and Cerci was equally wasteful when he failed to convert D'Agostino's low cross.
And further frustration was to follow as another fine delivery from Manuel Pasqual evaded both Gilardino and Cerci in front of goal.
Frey was roused from his slumbers by Daniele Corvia's 20-yard effort, but the attention shifted back to Gilardino and the linesman as the Italy forward advanced unchallenged on Rosati but was halted by the flag.
Ljajic dragged another effort wide and Rosati made one final impressive save to deny another substitute, Khouma Babacar, in the last minute.
And when another Ljajic effort skimmed the post and went wide in injury time, Lecce's improbable success was complete.
Catania 2-1 Parma
Catania earned their first points of the season courtesy of two penalties against Parma. Giuseppe Mascara converted the first in the 12th minute after Massimo Paci brought down Nicolas Spolli and Mirko Antenucci fired home the second eight minutes from time after being fouled by the hapless Paci.
Sebastian Giovinco got a late goal back for Parma but they came away empty-handed and even had Alessandro Lucarelli sent off in injury time.
Giovinco had gone wide with an early effort for Parma but it was Catania who went ahead as Mascara beat Antonio Mirante low and to his right.
Cristian Zaccardo had a chance for a quick equaliser, but could not keep his balance, while at the other end a powerful effort from Alessandro Potenza whistled over.
Adrian Ricchuiti was then off target from a great position from a corner.
Mariano Andujar had to make a good save to keep out Francesco Valiani's effort.
Parma continued to push and Giovinco's curling free-kick went just inches wide.
The pattern continued in the second half with Andujar making an outstanding save to keep out Zaccardo's close-range effort.
Giovinco then volleyed wide from Valeri Bojinov's cross.
They would pay for those misses as Paci conceded his second penalty of the day with a foul on Antenucci, who sent his spot-kick into the right-hand corner.
The decision clearly angered Parma boss Pasquale Marino who was sent to the stands.
Giovinco, having squandered so many chances, finally found the net in the first minute of injury time with a curling free-kick, but the match ended on a sour note for the visitors as Lucarelli was dismissed for a second yellow card.
Juventus 3-3 Sampdoria
Juventus picked up their first Serie A point of the season but could have had all three against Sampdoria as they twice relinquished the lead in an entertaining draw at Turin's Stadio Olimpico. Luigi Del Neri's side, who went down 1-0 at Bari in their opener a fortnight ago, trailed to Nicola Pozzi's 36th-minute strike but got back on terms through Claudio Marchisio two minutes before the break.
Simone Pepe and Fabio Quagliarella netted further goals for Juve after the interval but on each occasion they were cancelled out, first by Antonio Cassano and then by Pozzi again.
Pepe could have made his mark as early as the third minute but failed to test Gianluca Curci with what should have been a straightforward header from Marchisio's cross.
Alessandro Del Piero's attempt from the edge of the box was deflected over the bar and Pozzi sent another header wide, while an off-target shot from Reto Ziegler was the best Samp could muster in the early stages.
Former Samp keeper Storari came to Juve's rescue in the 21st minute to keep out a Pozzi blast after careless play by Felipe Melo, but the former Italy Under-21 striker did not have to wait too much longer to open the scoring.
Pozzi latched onto Cassano's pass and slotted home from 10 yards to give Samp a deserved lead.
Juve were level before the break, though.
Del Piero served notice of what was to come with a 30-yard free-kick which skimmed the post in the 40th minute and then three minutes later Marchisio's fierce drive gave Curci no chance.
The home team continued in the same vein after the interval and went ahead courtesy of a Pepe tap-in after Curci had saved Quagliarella's 20-yard effort.
Curci had to be on his toes to prevent Juventus going two up on the hour and did well to deny Milos Krasic after a fine run by the Serbia forward.
That saved proved crucial four minutes later when Cassano sprang the offside trap from Angelo Palombo's pass and found the corner of Storari's net.
The visitors were only on level terms for three minutes, though, before Quagliarella scored on the rebound after Pepe had hit the post.
Samp refused to give up, though, and equalised for a second time in the 73rd minute when Pozzi headed into the top-left corner from substitute Guido Marilungo's cross.
Napoli 2-2 Bari
Napoli and Bari shared four goals to conclude the second round of matches in Serie A. Paulo Barreto put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute, but Edison Cavani levelled for the home side after half an hour.
Paolo Cannavaro thought he had won it late on for Napoli, but Jose Castillo silenced the fans inside the Stadio San Paolo with an equaliser within a minute.
Bari were ahead after 12 minutes when Barreto met a corner which was curling in at the near post and nudged it over the line ahead of Napoli goalkeeper Morgan de Sanctis.
De Sanctis was understandably annoyed with his defence, who had not heeded the warning from a similar corner which he was forced to push behind just seconds earlier.
The Napoli attack made up for their defensive shortcomings, though, to level after half an hour.
Marek Hamsik squared the ball to Cavani, who scored his second goal in as many games, picking his spot in the bottom left-hand corner of Jean-Francois Gillet's goal.
Napoli rode their luck in the second half with Sergio Almiron causing problems.
The former Juventus midfielder could have put Bari back ahead in the 50th minute, but after being put through with only De Sanctis to beat, he tried to chip the ball over the Napoli custodian, who stretched out his arm and retrieved the ball.
At the other end, Ezequiel Lavezzi scooped the ball over the crossbar from close range after Gillet only fumbled Hamsik's shot.
Napoli got what they thought was the winning goal with three minute remaining when Lavezzi's cross from the right was just behind Jose Ernesto Sosa, who nevertheless managed to touch the ball back to Cannavaro, who picked his spot from eight yards.
Napoli were still celebrating when Castillo brought Bari level less than 60 seconds later.
Edgar Alvarez found Almiron in the penalty area and he squared the ball to Castillo, who could not miss with an open goal to aim at.
