Was brought in to replace Torres in January, think we all agree it was a bit of a panic buy

But since Liverpool still ended up with no European football, do some people think it was a bad buy?

Im not going to judge him on his performances since he moved because its unfair as he joined injured and had to adjust to a new team

But he was very overpriced at 35 million and that money could have brought in a top class striker
Ive never really rated him that highly, great in the air but he lacks alot with the ball at his feet

You could have probably bought someone like Llorente with that money this summer and still have money left over

nah we couldnt have, remember we have to pay taxes if the club reject the minimum fee which would hike the prices up

yeah it was a panic buy but you know he will be a good player for a number of years, with suarez i am happy with the business we have done

ideally i would have liked to have gotten llronte or aguero but neither club would accept at the time (spurs bid for llronte remember) taxes woul have taken the price up much higher

a good example to use aguero, without tax he will cost 45m euros, with taxes which is what madrid would have to pay, it would be 70m euros (confirmed by balague)

Carroll may come good with wingers but i doubt whether he is good enough tbh lets see him with a full pre season first

More a hindrance than anything with our current style imo, would prefer Kuyt or Suaarez up top.

He's different option which has been a down fall for liverpool in recent years, they can chance their style of play with him in the side. Would have been better if he had not been injured

id say give him a chance, he has been plagued with injuries this season and the move to a big club certainly hasnt helped. think he could come good but he wont ever fill torres' boots in terms of goals scored. tbh i think had the torres thing happened 2 weeks before they would have gone in for bent instead of carroll. more of a like for like player.

Scored more goals since January than Torres :champion:

Agree with Dotty. So far we've looked a far better team when he's not played. A front 3 of Suarez/Kuyt/Meireles has been excellent. They all seem to gel well and compliment each other.

Given a full pre-season and some new signings hopefully Carroll can blend into the team better. The injuries really haven't helped though. He's looked pretty sluggish (even more so than usual) when coming back.

Problem aswell

If Liverpool do decide to buy Mata, then that would be Mata and Suarez playing wide in the forward roles
Neither is a typical winger like Valencia, they both cut in alot, Carrolls biggest strength is his heading ability, take that away and he doesnt offer much else

Hopefully his foot work is much better when he's fit, but I get the feeling we've paid £35m for a poor man's Peter Crouch for some reason :(

s**t signing. Doesn't fit in and I don't think he ever will. I'm sure he'll be an effective player but he won't ever play his role as well as Kuyt can I reckon.

Llorente confirmed he turned us down in January btw.

Crouch isn't the greatest of comparisons tbh. They are about as different in terms of skillsets as can be. Crouch has good close control and holdup play but can't shoot or head a ball properly. Carroll can't beat a man unless he barges them to the ground and doesn't (so far) seem to hold it up that well but strikes a ball lovely and is supreme in the air.

The only similarity is their lack of pace and inability to run with the ball, but that's not what they are in the team for anyway.

That's me put in my place

My main issue here is his foot work, it takes him an age to control any sort of ball and when he has that sorted it takes him forever to release it. With the way we play atm we may as well have 10 men than line out with Carroll as the ball just keeps coming back anyway, he also gives the temptation of a hoof ball from the back. So he can't work the ball with short passes and can't hold onto it when it's hit long.

Personally I think the only way we're going to get anything out of him is if we invest big in two out and out wingers, which I don't see happening at all. We're set up to play ine touch inter change and I haven't seen too many top drawer wingers that can play this way, out and out wingers are a dying breed and players like Carroll are becoming obsolete.

(Rambled a bit there :S )

Anyway, based on what I've seen we've paid £35m for a guy that will end up doing Soto's job under Roy imo
