Does it matter if Utd got wind of the release clause from a 3rd party source?
Depends what they did - if they got that information and then went directly to the player, therefore bypassing Blackburn, surely it would technically be tapping up? :S
Isn't that just a formality though? You know there's a release clause so you approach the player in full knowledge that the bid will be accepted no matter what.
Even so, would you not need to get the bid officially accepted by the club before opening talks with the player? Assuming it will be/has to be accepted shouldn't make the formal procedure of a transfer null and void.

Assumption is the mother of all fork ups
In general yes. But if there is a set amount that a bid has to 100% be accepted at then surely waiting for confirmation from the selling club is a mere formality since there is only one answer?
Indeed, but it doesn't remove the need FOR that formality. I very much doubt Blackburn could make anything stick, just trying to see how/why they would complain.
The only way this transfer can be cancelled is on a technicality imo. Even then does anyone think Jones will go near another club knowing that Utd want him?

There's no way Jones will pick another club. He's willing to go to United and spend at least half the season not starting. He has his heart set, which is fair enough. You can't expect him to then go 'actually, I'll go to Liverpool.'

It'll go through, 100% sure on that. It might just be that Blackburn manage to get Utd to pay a few more £££.

No chance he can go to Liverpool and after all this I can't see any other club taking him either. He's put all his eggs into the Utd basket so both Jones and Utd are stuck with each other now. It's just a case of how much Utd will end up having to pay.

It'll probably all get dismissed and the £16m will be the fee

If Blackburn p*** him off enough, then tbh he will prob just leave out of spite. But if I were a Liverpool fan I wouldn't want him joining my club under those circumstances.

As a Liverpool fan I wouldn't give a crap if he joined under those circumstances, he would still give his all at any club

Regardless though he will still move to utd, just might take a little longer

Tbh, he might get even more support if he now came to LFC as it would be seen as a massive 'one-over' against Utd

Still not gonna happen though.

I received a text from Jones agent 30 minutes ago to say the deal was completed.

Bragging rights indeed :p

Are Blackburn pretty much saying "Give us more money or we'll report you." isn't that blackmail?

Stalling tactic.

When your club is run by lunatics, it's going to turn into an asylum.
