I don't think Jones was one of the "2 or 3" SAF had in mind at the beginning of the summer. I think Liverpool forced his hand on this one and he'd have rather waited another year or so.

Gutted, absolutely gutted.

But, if I had to choose a team for him to go to it would be Utd or Arsenal

Harry Redknapp: "We were in for Phil Jones, along with 5 other top clubs. He's a future England captain and a great signing for Manchester Utd"

Redknapp claims to be in the running for so many players that he doesn't sign but I don't think he was actually in the running for half of them. I think he hates to feel left out!

I don't see how Jones coming in will affect Smalling. Smalling will be Rio's replacement and Jones will be Vidic's from what I can see. Jones is the fighting, physical, last ditch tackle player but with more pace than Vidic. Smalling is the ball playing defender with a calm head on his shoulders and cleans up the mess that Rio does.

This will have a much more detrimental affect on Evans.

Hmmm Jones is very cool on the ball as well mate. He played in midfield for half the season and we really missed him when he got injured.

A great signing for whoever gets him. If he doesn't get first team football it will be a very bad move though. At least either him or Smalling should be loaned to another club to help their development, they can't both play at cb.

Maybe SAF sees him as a short term replacement for Scholes in a defensive midfield role which he played in for Rovers? Time will tell. We at least have Grant Hanley for cb to replace Jones. Hanley is almost as good as Jones was when he first started except he is Scottish :ph43r: Maybe it will allow Hanley the game time he needs to develop to become an exceptional player instead of a very good one. He could get a run in the team.

The kid obviously wanted to be at United, there's not much other managers can do if that's the case.

Yeah, Smalling has looked much better at United than he did before. You'd rather go and learn from Vidic and Ferdinand than anyone we've got. I still think Jones should have stayed where he would be a regular starter.

Really looking forward to the future now. Defence should look like this: Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Fabio

A few years before that happens. But very happy with the Jones signing.
