I read a quote today by Roland Allen referring to the Austrian team of the late 70s and it reminded me of the Arsenal team today. The quote was "It looks fine, it is fine: when the Austrians have learned how to turn all their cleverness into something that counts: when they have organised the winning of football matches as highly as they have organised the taming of a football, they will make everyone sit up and take notice" So is the writing on the wall and are this Arsenal team close to winning a number of EPL titles, or dominating the league like United or Chelsea? Discuss. |

Arsenal have a good group of players but they need to clear a lot of their worse off players and buy in some quality. I don't think they will dominate the Prem again while Wenger is in charge though. Add to the fact that Fabregas, Nasri and Clichy are all being linked with transfers away from Arsenal. If they leave the only player of real quality there is Van Persie but he is normally always injured. Rosicky, Vela, Denilson, Squillaci, Arshavin, Eboue, Chamakh and Bendtner need to go and players with quality and experience need to be brought in if Arsenal want to get to their glory days like the 90's |

I would love for Arsenal's patience to pay off but I don't see it happening because football is changing so much. Arsenal's softly softly approach for long term success might eventually hit the right note but it's not giving us advantages because other clubs are happy to throw cash at their problems looking for short term success every few years. Only one club in England makes more money than Arsenal so financially we seem to be set but the player balance isn't right, and hasn't been for a while. Also, with every year that we don't win trophies, belief that we can is declining. Fans are getting more demanding, listening to other supporters and pundits. Anyone who once wanted players who had real pride and heart for the club is now happy to have players at the club who are there for cash as long as they're decent. Look at the Nasri situation. Those of us who are torn between wanting Arsenal to tell him to get lost and wanting him to stay because he's a good player would probably lean more towards the former if we'd been more successful lately. We're all pretty desperate now and it's placing more stress on the manager which imo is trickling down to the players. I think Arsenal would earn more praise for success than clubs like Chelsea or City but for now, I think that Wenger has an old fashioned idea in a new world of football, an idea where cheap youngsters can come together to win trophies and are happy to spend years building up to it. |

Arsenal are a long way off dominating the PL and are likely to be further away if current transfer rumours are in any way accurate. If they lose Fabregas and Nasri, what's left? The Vermin and Van Persie. They will buy this summer, of that I have no doubt, but they won't be big enough buys to replace the above. Chelsea, Man Utd and City will all buy big this summer. Liverpool should continue to improve and Spurs will buy a decent striker and be there or there abouts. I know it's a common statement, but Arsenal will have to improve to stay in the top four, because those around them will defo improve and they only just made it this season. If they lose Nasri and Fabregas, will they still be able to improve? A big ask. |
