To clarify my Twitter remarks re: Cristian Zapata. There are various reasons why I'm a little sceptical. First, I should have said he "might not" qualify for a permit as opposed to "highly doubt". I don't know if he has an Italian passport, and if he does it's moot, but he hasn't played in the mandated 75% of Colombia's games the past 2 years. In theory he should by the time Copa finishes, but this isn't a given.

Second, while I certainly don't profess to know every single target LFC has, I have some idea of who some of them are (via good sources) and this is the first I have heard of Zapata compared to some of the other more obvious CB targets (Cahill initially, then Jones, Dann and Lovren etc.)

Third, his comments indicate he has yet to make a final decision and won't do until after Copa ends. Even assuming he says "yes" to LFC, by the time his vacation is over and paperwork, it'd be August before he could join the team. I have to think LFC would prefer to get their options lined up before then. Waiting on him could cause them to miss out on other potential CB targets.

Finally, in general when a player is that close to signing a deal with a team he is committed to, he keeps quiet. The mere fact that he is announcing this publicly and so soon is a bit of a red flag. Typically when a player or his agent does this, it's because they want to invite or flush out other bidders.

And finally, this of course is purely my opinion. I could in all likelihood be very wrong about all this, but obviously we're all going to find out after Zapata is done with Copa America.

As for actually assessing Zapata as a player, think he's an excellent central defender with all the physical attributes one could need.

I would say so. Zapata's better than him and less injury prone anyway.
