FIFA has expressed serious concerns over the slow pace of Brazil’s preparations for hosting the 2014 World Cup.

Speaking Friday at the World Football Forum in Moscow, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke lamented that Brazil put more value into winning the hosting rights than organizing the event.

He said: 'We don’t have stadiums, we don’t have airports and it is looking increasingly likely that some facilities, including Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana stadium, would only be ready with a few weeks to spare.'

It was Valcke’s first public appearance since FIFA exonerated him of wrongdoing for saying Qatar had 'bought' the 2022 World Cup hosting rights.

Earlier this week Brazil legend Romario claimed that only divine intervention would help his country's preparations for the showpiece finals.

Romario, now a member of Congress, was part of the Brazilian committee at FIFA headquarters in Zurich when Brazil was named as host.

The former Barcelona striker, a World Cup winner in 1994 insisted: 'I'm going to tell you a truth: the gospels say Jesus will return. Only He can ensure Brazil stage the best Cup. If he comes down in the next three years, then it will be possible.

'Back then, when the Cup was handed to Brazil, there was much celebration. I said two things: Brazil not only had the conditions to hold the World Cup but also the best of all time. I hold by the first idea (but) I withdraw the second.

'Because, from what I'm seeing, things aren't going to happen. We'll have the Cup but sadly we'll have problems and it won't be the best.'

I've decided I'm going to Brazil for this World Cup so they better get their s**t together

Stadiums still not finished, so FIFA are exploring re-arranging matches to different venues.

Workers in certain areas have been unpaid for months.

Pitbull is writing the official WC anthem.

This sounds like it's going to be a forking awful WC.

On that evidence I'd say it's a lock for worst World Cup ever.

Amazing that they're not getting any flak for this apart from the odd article here and there. Hardly anything is finished yet, complete mess. OG will be such a disaster too but Brazil will get away with that too because they're seen as a cool country.

tbf Vienna, every tournament that's organised looks like it won't be ready...until we get to it and then everything is ready. I'm just thinking it's more of the same.

Dunno trebs.

I will give you SA 2010, they only finished their stadiums in the last months but had a working infrastructure.

Germany 2006 - everything was ready in time.

Jap/SK 2002 - everything was ready and finished years before the WC

Franc 98 - all was done long before the WC as well.

As well as SA, I'm thinking all of the last 3 OGs. London, China and Athens :S

London? Everything was pretty much on time? Wasn't it?

China were done with everything in 2007, the government put all their resources in there so that they dont lose face.

Athens was a last minute effort and one of the reasons why they're struggling today.

London was made out to be going wrong to the end, by the British press tbf. I'm sure they were saying the "nest" for China was still unfinished a few months before the opening :S

I don't know why but I think it's Brazil. And it's football. The two just go together and it'll be ready lol
