It has been years since we have regularly seen teams play with 3 at the back, will we be starting to see more teams revert back to playing with 3 defenders? Barcelona have played that way a lot so far this season - as well as a number of clubs in Italy such as Inter and Napoli.

What do you think are the benefits of using this system?

It's a much more fluid system imo. It has the added benefit of having either a dedicated sweeper or a libero without taking away from the base CB pairing. It can leave teams very susceptible on the wings but there are more and more FB's around that are more than used to being deployed in advanced role e.g Balzaretti, Cassani, Dossena to name some around atm.

You need to have decent fullbacks who are willing to get back if you're going play with 3. Personally dislike it.

I'm not so sure playing with a sweeper would make a team more fluid. They wouldn't be able to effectively play an offside trap - something that is quite important for teams that are going to dominate possession.

Not necessarily - Barca play with the 3 CBs and then 4 midfielders.

yeah but they have been exposed on the right(other teams left) so many times before!
Alves doesn't offer enough cover for the Barcelona team imo.
I feel that the 3 at the back without wing cover leaves the team quite open.

Depends really. Barca effectively played with a sweeper in the form of Masch/Busquets last season when they dropped between the two CB's. Roma do it atm with DDR and they have dominated possesion in their games so far.

I don't think them players really dropped deeper than the CBs though. A sweeper would stay stationed behind the CBs, them DMs are further up but occasionally drop back to become the 3rd CB - still allowing them to use their offside trap.
