Good point, but lets try playing football for a change. Does Rooney hold the ball up that well (Iknow he can if required) then if he plays with Bent or AN other? Perhaps play Carroll to do a job against certain teams then? |

Its not just hitting it long, but being able to push the ball back onto the midfield and retain possession, and holding the ball up to pass it wide to the 2 wingers. I can see the Gerrard Bent situation mainly involving going straight through the middle and always trying get get Bent in behind. From what I'v seen of Cleaverly this season he could be better option playing off Bent. Or Welbeck playing insted of Bent as he does have alot more to his game by using his physical strength. I just see Bent and Gerrard struggling to break down the teams that Park the bus, as Gerrard and Torres did at Liverpool, we will be reliant on Gerrard being able to pull off a wonder goal to break them down |

So Gerrard playing behind a striker is a problem? It seems you would rather play someone else behind Bent than play Gerrard with another striker? Agree about breaking teams down, thats why I suggest Carroll or someone else of that ilk to hold the ball up when needed. Is Rooney that good at holding the ball up then? He to me is another thats direct, yet I have never heard anyone say that he shouldnt play up top with Bent for that reason? Perhaps they should ! |

& I fully understand holding the ball up isnt just about hitting it long as such, but it does tend to suggest that. Surely Bent can run the channels as can Young & Downing from either flank. Gerrard is more than capable of holding up play when its passed up to him

I also suggested Welbeck as a different option to bent so i think you may have missed part of what I posted. I also suggested earlier that the system woudl work vs bigger teams Its personal oppinion with Rooney but IMO he holds the ball up well and has dont when he plays the loan striker(although he has to receive the ball to do this ) and he can do it when played deeper Running the channels is not keeping possession though is it? it counter attacking and trying to get in behind |

I did miss that about Wellbeck - apologies. I do see him as a second striker as well though & therefore didnt read your post properly & assumed. IMO running the channels can be about keeping possesion, you can either run them and use the ball quickly (if you have support) like the counter attacks you elude to or you can keep it, hold it up or then play it, not always with an attacking intent. well thats the way I see it. Its about uses the channels & the full width of the pitch I hate rooney as a target man for england, he's OK at Utd doing it as they flood forward. He cuts a forlorn, frustrated manner when deployed that way for England, its why he got sent off IMO |

Yer for England he just doesnt see enough of the ball. Especially when England cant hold onto it in their own half |

Deffo then he drops deep & we have nothing up front if we do break. He gets so frustrated, id never play him up top like that for england. He should nearly always have people ahead of him or easy to find so he can then pass & move |

The most surprising thing about this thread is that ANYONE is suggesting that Downing is an international class footballer. An average PL player at best. |

England would be stupid not to bring Rooney. Yeah he will miss the group stage games but they will need him most when they get through the group. Or maybe, they won'tbring him because they are not confident of getting out of their group |

really doesnt matter. if they turn up at all England will have enough quality to make it through the group stages anyway, then we will have a fresh rooney raring to go for the knockout stages hopefully. any suggestion he wont be picked at all in just naive. he is the one world class player we have. Bent with gerrard, ash and downing/walcott will be enough to comfortably see us through the groups imo. assuming they turn up and not take a vacation like in the world cup
