Rafa is a very good manager. Don't tell me there isn't even a small part of you that is curious how it would turn out if he got his first choice targets.
Gareth Barry to replace Alonso?
Which came about because he needed funds to work with, and Alonso was saleable. Well not as much as thought, no one would buy him!

If he had NESV he wouldn't be selling Bellamy to afford Torres etc. We'd have such a brilliant team if we stumped up the cash for Alves, Aguero et al.
Alonso then went on to have his best season for you and help you mount their only title challenge in 20 years.

Did he really though? :S

We would be lower if it wasnt for that one season yous got 80 million for Ronaldo
If my granny had bollocks she'd be my granda.

That's not my point though. That table shows the club was spending more than it was earning on transfers in the Rafa years (04-10?). I'm not sure how accurate they are, was the first table I came across.
Yup and so was the other 20 clubs in the league...so

Sigh. Paddy said the following

I thought he was getting at he needed to sell to buy, which that table shows he didn't necessarily. You still follow?

Benitez not getting money to spend was an absolute Myth. City, Chelsea and Spurs were the only clubs to spend more while he was there. If for some reason people want to discount the Ronaldo figure then lets just arbitrarily discount Liverpool's highest sale which was probably Alonso for 35m right? Which puts both clubs at the same spend despite the fact that we are now picking and choosing which figures to use for no reason whatsoever except because it makes Liverpool look better  .

The argument that the team was being rebuilt doesnt really count as so was United's and they managed to do it with significantly less spending.

If you look at the wage bills Liverpool's was right near the top, almost exactly the same as United's as well.

No Benitez didn't have the spending power of Chelsea or Cty in the later years. But Liverpool were outperformed by United and Arsenal for almost that entire period while using less financial resources. Plus other teams have finished above Liverpool in that same period as well.

Benitez is clearly a good manager but lets get rid of this myth about him being hard done by with massive financial restraints.

Edit: I thought Arsenal did better in that period but they were actually about level with Liverpool in terms of who finished higher in each season.

If most of you do think he is a stop gap then do you actually want him as your manager now? Surely you'd much rather someone more permanent that you can look to the future with and he can build his own team.
a bit of a gamble and shock appointment will be jamie carragher. thats what the rumour flying about is.

kenny is no tactical genius, he doesnt know how to influence or change a game from the bench. this was evident last time he was in charge and its evident this time

i wouldnt mind it at all tbh. worked for barca, although they already had a quality team when gurdiola took over. carra is about to undertake his uefa badges at some point over the next year. once they are done he will be offered a player/coach role until he retires from playing football. the only thing is it may be a bit too soon when kenny leaves. carra epitomises what liverpool is all about, has a far superior knowledge of the game compared to players still playing. it all depends on weather or not the owners want to take a chance but we shall see. it will happen tho at some point.

Carragher would be worse than Roy Keane. Zero tactical acumen and can't man manage to save his life....and he's a scrote.

I know enough to see he'd be a s**t manager. He'd probably do as a coach of some sort but his general idea of what constitutes the way a team should play means he's never make the step up imo

most people assume carra likes to play long football because he hoofs the ball up field. the style of play wouldnt be like that under him as manager because hes a throwback to the old school of defending. its all about clearing your lines regardless, probably why hes not done so well over the past couple of seasons.

The way a player plays is usually a decent indicator towards what style he'd play as a manager. I don't think he'd be worth the gamble at all.
