scholes retiring was in the pipe line tho, pretty sure i seen talk about it before last season started :S

yes i agree hes tried but hes tried with an inferior product because he knows the rest of the team during that period would more than make up for it. utd could cope with out one of keane or scholes but they couldnt cope with out both. something which has come more apparent this season.

wenger has done the same with his defence. hes patched it up again and again and again but to no avail. that to me makes them similar in a way
Well the Scholes talk was going on for a few years but apparently him and Giggs were just deciding at the end of the season if they'd stay on or not. Doesn't mean we shouldn't have brought anybody in though i agree. The fact we were in for Sneijder shows that Fergie was actively trying to improve our midfield though.

You can't replace Scholes and Keane, they were among the very best at what they did. Of course losing both was a huge blow, Barca losing Xavi and Iniesta would be massive blow. It's like saying "oh well just replace Zidane when he retires", there aren't that many top players out there and the ones that are would cost a fortune or aren't available.
thats why i was on about brining in a young player with undoubted potential, someone like gotze, martinez, mvilla, sissoko, benega, defour would be ideal. yes they may never be a scholes or a keane but if they reached 75% of scholes or keanes ability, you would have some very good players playing for you currently.

thats the thing i dont understand, you know to key players will be retiring soon. so you make plans for that. its been done with giggs because young is his replacement imo. i do think fergie was thinking cleverly could at least try to make the place his this season, which he has tried but with limited chance. another thing maybe the decline of fletcher after the illness he suffered. he doesnt seem the same player but thats more down to lack of match practice not ability imo.

this all points to papering over cracks or a blind spot imo but at least hes tried to do something about it this season, a season too late maybe?

lol yup. yh he looks very good and he plays that deep role. fergie keeps saying if he buys players then the youth will suffer. so i think he is showing huge faith in these guys.

Pogba is not even nearly a DM. He's actually very poor defensively.

in the things ive seen hes got what it takes he 18/19 that will come. Fergie is going to make him a dm imo i think u believe i mean as defensive player. when i mean a deep playmaker as opposed to a destroyer.

He doesn't have the positional sense to be a deep lying playmaker and would be completely wasted in our own half. Don't be fooled by his physique he is an attack minded midfielder.

so far in both games in the cups fergie is getting him to play deep looks like thats what he wants to do too. i think hed play exactly like vieira he wont stay in one position coz he has too mich ability but his startimg position will be deepest of the midfielders. that seems what fergie wants frm him so far.

So he won't be a deep lying player? The Viera comparisons are slightly lazy I think. He's not box to box in the way Viera was he is very much attack minded. When united aren't in position (and this includes reserve and academy level) he doesn't seem to know what to do. Tunnicliffe has rescued him countless times over the last two years due to laziness tracking back and poor positional sense. Morrison would be much better than him in the deeper role, though that would waste Morrison's game imo.

but you are forgetting hes 18/19 fergie can still mould him into what he wants. and what your forgetting reserve snd youth level games is so different to top level football where the grounds are bigger and he can spray balls around frm deep which he seems to like doing. but cant do as much at the lower levels given the cramped pitches.

can united wait for a couple more years for these players to potentially make it at the required level?

Aldershot's groud and Elland road aren't much bigger than Moss lane. And if the pitches are smaller and he looks clueless in defence, then the boggier pitches in the premier league will only exploit that further.

@Roo, Morrison should be a full time member of the first team squad after Christmas. Playing him in the reserves is useless as he's already far and away the best player in most matches. It's so easy for him it's ridiculous. He's still building up fitness though after being injured at the start of the season so keep him ticking over with them for another month or two then give him minutes in the first team. He's ready to make an impact. Pogba I think is a year or two away from Morrison's level.

I laughed at one of the replies when u posted this on Boards Monty. Something like we don't need a DM, we need someone that is great defensively while also very creative. Oh ok, let's just magic the most complete midfielder out of thin air then so.
Michael Carrick, Andrea Pirlo & Xabi Alonso. All creative and all, relative to their function, great defensively.
