omg why don't u ever read properly and actually digest what is being written. really grinds on me. Ive gone through it over and over again and how on earth is it a feeble excuse that the man (Cantona) came captained the side to two doubles in his four years? and helped mould the young uns? had character not seen since Best and started Fergie's real achievements at old trafford? if thats feeble then we may all just give up now.
He didn't :S

but woody you rate Berbatov so highly. i respect your view but when u back berba so much i struggle to understand your point about forwards scoring goals. Cantona created and scored and was a huge personality and a leader/captain. he had so much to his game. and his style of play was mesmerising.
What has my opinion on Berba got to do with this?

Cantona was confirmed as United's captain for the 1996–97 season following the departure of Steve Bruce to Birmingham City.

Cantona was only captain when we won the league in 96/97, if I'm not mistaken and that was the only trophy he won with us a captain iirc

Think it was because you were comparing goalscoring records and you said that's what a forward does.

It is but Berba's goalscoring hasn't been criticised from what I've seen on the forum. Its his work rate that people have complained about

I'm not doubting it. But the same applies when Cantona was around no one mentioned his goalscoring exploits. Is unfair to compare the 2 anyway as although I know RVN was much more than a goalscorer that was something he certainly excelled at and will be remembered for more than anything else.

In the context of influence he helped build the brand. He was the first really quality flair player. He was so important to the development of that united team, especially his influence on the kids that came through like scholes, beckham, etc etc

Don't get me wrong RVN, had a lot more to his game that scoring goals. What I meant to say is that a striker main purpose is to score goals. Of course strikers have different attributes, which makes them who they are and how good they are, but at the end of the day, the only tangible thing they can show, is their goals, whcih is what they are mainly judged on
