Yes but we already had the foundations of a very strong team
You should have just stopped typing your post right there because so do we.
We had Rooney and Ronaldo for the positions you've got Downing and Carroll. Don't even try and compare them ffs
Oh come on

I'll write a proper post later

I was just trying to think who your other strikers are/were

The point I was making is that you picked your two best players form that era and 2 of our new signings who haven't settled. If you want to pick your own best striker, why not pick ours? If you want to pick your own best winger, why not pick ours?

Just pointing out your BIAST ( :champion: ) selection :D
Our best player from that era was RVN who couldn't even get in the team :D

The team we had that won the CC in 2006 only needed one signing (Michael Carrick) to push us on to winning the league the next season and getting to the CL semi finals. 3 more additions to the squad and we were champions on England and Europe.

That team is still the same Utd team who have dominated the entire EPL era though. You simply cannot compare Liverpool to Utd these days. They are poles apart. We are in the process of having a complete rebuild of a squad that was not good enough to win the league. Not slightly changing a title winning team ffs

You can't say the United of 1994 was the same as the United of 2005  We rebuilt a squad that wasn't good enough to win the league (the likes of Smith, Fortune, Kleberson, Bellion, Miller, Djembas, Phil Neville and John O'Shea making up our midfield  ) And Roy forking Carroll.

You had still won the league in 2003 though and I presume finished inside the top 3 in the 3 years before your next win in 2006/07?

We are talking here about a liverpool side that hasn't even been inside the top 4 for 2 and a half years now and even before that was very much the 3rd/4th best in the league. We have not been a regular title contender for 20 years

Like I say - comparing Liverpool to Utd these days is folly. They are too far apart in so many ways for them to be compared like for like in that way.

The last two to comment were me and Uwe who said it was a trophy worth winning but basically agreed that it isn't necessarily going to be a "stepping stone to larger things". Not exactly a radical viewpoint there.

Plus regardless of which of the two teams we support get the League/Europa im willing to bet people would prefer 1st/2nd in the league rather than 7th and the CC. A little perspective here. This win is good for Liverpool, any team would want it, but fans of the current top two teams still wouldn't want to exchange places with you.
I was still about 3 pages back and just assumed it was going to be the same for the next 3 and tried to save time

You're right but I don't see your point. It's like saying Liverpool are all right because they finished second in 2009.

Yea but it was Dot who compared the wins, and me who pointed out how different they are

I think he was making the point that it can be the catalyst for greater things. Greater things for Utd at the time was winning the league. Greater things for Liverpool right now is to get back into the top 4. It just needs putting into perspective a little. As much as it pains me to say, we are a tier below Utd these days and we have to get back into that top tier before we can even begin to build for a title challenge. Hopefully this win will give us the confidence to move back towards where we want to be :thumb:

That's fair enough. I'm still just dubious abut the relative impact of the domestic cups on a teams pulling power outside of the prem.
