The four pots that will determine the draw for the 2014 World Cup have been confirmed by FIFA. The draw will take place this Friday afternoon as everyone anxiously awaits to see who will be this year's group of death and the path their home nation need to take to reach the knock-out stage. The big news of the day sees the nine unseeded European teams all clustered in the same pot - pot four - while pot two only has seven teams. The pots will be as follows: Pot 1 (Seeded Teams) Brazil Argentina Colombia Uruguay Belgium Germany Spain Switzerland Pot 2 (South America and Africa) Algeria Cameroon Cote d'Ivoire Ghana Nigeria Chile Ecuador Pot 3 (Concacaf and Asia) Australia Iran Japan Korea Republic Costa Rica Honduras Mexico USA Pot 4 (Europe) Bosnia-Herzegovina Croatia England France Greece Italy Netherlands Portugal Russia The rules for the draw allow for only two European teams to be in the same group while the other teams cannot be grouped together with teams from their same federations. Since Chile and Ecuador cannot be in the same group as other South American nations, by rule, these two nations will have to be in the same group as one of the European top seeds. With pot four containing nine teams, there will be a special accommodation made that will see one of the teams from the pot placed into a special pot in the begining of the draw to even out the groups. This will see one of these teams grouped together with one of the South American top seeds. Group A Brazil Croatia Mexico Cameroon Group B Spain Holland Chile Australia Group C Colombia Greece Ivory Coast Japan Group D Uruguay Costa Rica England Italy Group E Switzerland Ecuador France Honduras Group F Argentina Bosnia Iran Nigeria Group G Germany Portugal Ghana USA Group H Belgium Algeria Russia South Korea Edited by Dotty, Dec 6 2013, 06:17 PM.

There was quite a good article on the BBC about it. They have basically been clever with their fixtures by not playing many friendlies. If England hadn't played a couple of the pointless friendlies that they did they would have been seeded due to the way the ranking points are acrued. Same with Italy - their friendly against San Marino forked them over royally. The national FA's should be looking at FIFA ranking points instead of financial gain all the time. |

Belguim too It was based on last months rankings, not the current one's. I think Italy are ranked 7th at present and were around 10/11 before |

It's not even done on total points - it's done on an average. That's why, even though Italy destroyed San Marino, they barely got any points for it due to San Marino's ranking. Therefore their average went down by a fair bit. Here's the article about it: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25134584 Gives a complete breakdown of how the points are worked out. Every FA should be looking at this and working out their fixtures to maximise their potential ranking to give them the best possible chance in competitions. |

Rehearsal draw. Pity it's only the rehearsal because it threw up some good group games Group A had Brazil, France, Australia and Italy. The opening game of the tournament would be Brazil-France. Group B was Uruguay, Nigeria, USA and Croatia. Group C had Argentina, Ghana, Costa Rica and Russia. Group D in the rehearsal was Switzerland, Chile, Japan and Greece. Group E was Spain, Ivory Coast, South Korea and England. Group F is Colombia, Cameroon, Honduras and Holland. Group G had Germany, Ecuador, Iran and Portugal. Group H provided Belgium, Algeria, Mexico and Bosnia. |

Some terrible teams would qualify from that scenario. |

FIFA will ensure that does not happen. They don't want Italy, Brazil and France all in the same group. While 2 of Belgium, Algeria, Mexico or Bosnia qualify. |
